I checked with Peterson in Santa Rosa a few days ago and they came up with a # they thought may work which was 2M6497, same as what you said. I ordered it on Wednesday, it should be here Saturday at the drop. It does only have 3 terminals Bat, F, A1 but I think A2 which is the ground to engine block can be found where it mounts on tractor. The original mount has 3 isolators which prevent grounding thus the need for A2. I can run a jumper, regulator to ground. I will try it and see what happens. I am still looking for an original regulator because I like to keep things "factory" if possible. Thank You all, Gary

Some good reading on generators and A and B circuit regulators.

2M6497 is still a Delco Regulator # x-41005. Cat used both Delco and AB generators but the regulators do not interchange.

Josh-- Thank You for the info. I printed out some of the pages and will use them when I have questions. The article is a good resource.
I have included pictures of the regulator and the cover which says to disconnect the field wire before flashing. Which leads me to believe it is a "B" system.
I checked my generator and with wires disconnected using a ohm meter set at 200, I get 20 on the field terminal and 1.2 on the arm terminal.

OM-- I think that 2m6497 is an "A" circuit if I understand you correctly. I won't install unless I am positive it won't smoke!

Glen-- I called Hoots and the man I need to talk to will be in Monday.

Thanks Again everyone,
Gary

I picked up the new regulator this morning. The box says "Regulator A" so I guess that answers my question. I will return it Next week.

Now I need one of these 4H7946 regulators. Gary did you ever find one? Am I going to have to switch to an alternator?

I was never able to find anyone to repair it or replace it with a new or used one. Maybe find an "A" circuit generator that will fit and use the readily available "A" regulators? I am still looking. Thanks for keeping the thread going. Gary

Mine was in a small smoldering fire that I got put out but not before it melted a little insulation off the board inside right where a rivet lives. It sparks there when I force the regulator contacts together. I haven't taken it to the rebuilder yet, but he may be able to fix it or have a source for another. He's been in business for 40+ years so I'm sure he's seen these before.

Replied by rax200 on topic Generator B to A conversion
Gary,
Have you thought about converting the generator from a B type to a A type, it is a simple conversion by taking the field wire that is earthed and moving it to the brushes that is connected to the A terminal. This will allow you to use an A type regulator.
