Is it true that the heads (rear one at least) fails because the engine side covers have been removed - which typically happens in order to provide more ready access to the engine??
I was told this by an owner:mmph:
The TD 24 was produced between 1947 and 1959. It used as did most IH diesels of that era a gas start diesel. The only engine started on gas and then was switched over. All of them had head cracking issues due to operator error. Once the engine was up to operating temperature they had to be switch back to gas for a cool down prior to shutting them down. Failure to do that lead to cracked heads. You can find lots of info on the gas start diesels on the Redpower forums. IH used the gas start diesels on both wheeled farm tractors and the TD series crawlers. FYI IH gas crawlers were T series and the diesel was TD. Gas start diesel farm tractors included the MD, SMDTA, WD 4/6/9 and the 100 (400ECT) and 50 series (450ECT). Many of those tractors and crawlers have been converted to gas because the heads, especially the 4 cylinder ones are extremely hard to find.

US military was very good at warehousing parts and other items that supported equipment that was no longer in the inventory for years. As long as they didn't need the space they hardly if ever looked at it. Lot of that changed in the 90's with the draw down and base closures.

Hi Steve
no - I have told you everything I know about Inters and Cats - much to my disadvantage:mmph:
Perhaps it's time you fessed up about your recent Cat and Inter aquisitions:spy:
Some pictures of the newbies would be nice too:)
PS I almost dropped in yesterday as I was passing your Inter/Cat Empire but ran out of time:doh:

I'm guessing you were in the area snooping for some cats to drag home from my area ?
I better go check the boundary fences again
BTW I haven't seen any pictures of a tidy tail seat D2 lately ?

well yes, how did you guess - a tidy Holt 2 ton and a 35 were on the menu (and a 30 to gloat over but not for sale) but alas the family has cracked down on me again saying that I am out of control and SWMBO has threatened to remove all privileges:frusty:
The totally lost it when I desired a Stihl 064 chainsaw (probably the best one they ever built) and I ended up with three of them:tsk:
What I need is a business somewhere away from home, one that has large lockable sheds where prying eyes cannot go.
Hum that reminds me of a couple of blokes I know!!
The tail seat is coming along fine...will be painted by next weekend and re-assembled thereafter.
I'll post some pics as the reassembly starts.
This is the only machine I've ever bought that apart from some repairs to panels has required only large amount of elbow grease to restore.
Now what have you been up to Steve??
