The hydraulic place you went to must have been quoting you for a new rods and pistons too. I get packing kits for my log loader cylinders from Prentice and it only cost about $60 and that's for a 5" cylinder. Of course, I have to do the work myself but that is easy if no machining or chroming has to be done. Is Cat stuff that expensive for just the rubber? Something sounds fishy.

if the rods are gouged i have used JB weld or some epoxy filler and just buff smooth there is no pressure to speak of just so the seals can do their job and not get cut not pretty but it works no one will know if you install bellows shaft protectors over the rods

Although I never saw the build sheet on the $3,500 cylinders, I'm sure it was no barnyard fix. I'd expect cylinder hone or maybe even replacement, new or replated rods, possible piston change to accommodate modern seals, packing gland change, etc. It is also unlikely that the work was done in house by Cat which means additional handling and mark up. Just saying that type of cost is not unexpected for those services in the commercial equipment world. Try pricing all new from Cat or others and you may find that is a bargain.

good info.
I didn't take it to cat. this vendor was a huge commercial outfit.
I will post pictures in a couple days on the other forum, under discussions. (now a days it takes me 3 to 5 times longer to get things done)
pump and stuff, I figure the 3000 psi would be safe even if its only 1000psi pump.
The vendor is suppose to call me today with a band-aid quote, lol.. I saw a sign that there hourly rate is 150 hr (I figured that was ok, standard from what I've seen)
I said to the guy, 1500 each, his reply was, well.. the machine is down right. I was thinking to my self Huuuh. lol. iam I am sure they do AAAAA work tho.
crazy stuff.

I'm drawing from memory here so don't hold me to it but I believe an outfit called "Chromecraft" out of the Sacramento area is the biggy in cylinder refurbishment. That's probably where most west coast cylinders go to get redone.

i just re-sealed my 922B tilt cly with all new seals and packing glands got it done for 200.00 Canadian that was for cat. i know if i had take the time to figer it all out and order from my local hyd shop i going to say 100.00 for all the seals but i wonted it back together for the long weekend and you can't beat Cat for parts shipping plus there are on my way home. ya shop rate is what going to kill you most shop are 150-165 if you have the tools do it your self then you know what you got in there. get the seals and have a go unless it needs machine work done.
