Just wondering how much side hill you can get on safely before a guy has problems? I'm sure speed has a factor. Has Cat ever published anything as far as degrees/percentages goes ? I have a D4 6u 44 gauge and it can get serious pucker factor happening:eek: It seems that these tractors have a low center of gravity, but they can scare the hell out of a guy as most of them are not equip'd w/rops. I'm thinking of mounting a incliometer on mine for a ref. just so I kinda know where i'm at. Any of your input would be appreciated.
Thanks, quinq

Quinq, if you don't have a ROPS I wouldn't side hill at all. Rent a newer machine. A wide gauge machine is best for slopes. I don't know if your tractors have blades or not. A dozer grading a slope is less likely to slide then a tractor with no blade, (or with the blade up) because of the windrow of dirt on the low side.

How steep do you want to get?? I have had mine on slopes right at 48%
( %....NOT degrees)

I had heard that those new fangled High Track Cats can side hill better'n an older Cat but they just don't look like thay could with those high mounted sprockets. I ran a new one for a few days but never got the chance to try it. One thing I will say about 'em, visiblity is MUCH better and I could fall in love with those fingertip controls! Now if they'd just install stereos in 'em. . . .
As far as the older Cats go, I'll swear I've seen loggers turn around on hills that had close to what looked like a 100% slope
to pick up another load, but then skid loggers aren't quite right anyway.
I sure wouldn't be trying sidehilling without a ROPS, seatbelt and a handy roll of toilet paper or two!!

98j farms about 900 acres in each section because of the hills.
A lot of it is experience as 98j knows his Cat and knows what to expect. If you have not operated a Cat very much, be sure to err on the side of safety. A 6U is not nearly as stable on a sidehill as the wider stance of the 7U. Keep in mind what is going to happen if you jump the downhill track. If you don't have a rops and a belt, play it safe!!

Runnin' a narrow guage on a slope, no matter what size it is, will definitely have a pucker factor no matter what slope! I run my D2 5J on pretty steep side slopes with a killifer disc set wide open, and she will lose traction and start to slide sideways as a warning to me. But then again I've been runnin her for close to 20 years now doing this cutting firebreaks and the like. She also pre-warns me that if I can't pull the disc in wide open straight up the hill, I definitely don't want to go sideways on it! Just my pocket change on the matter.

Just to clarify a bit. I used to think about it a lot until it happened to me. Don't stop to think, JUMP UPHILL!
