Here is a cross section view of the booster. The hydraulic control spool is burried pretty far back and is pretty well protected. Rod can get corroded and effect operation but in general bad boots don't seem to have much adverse affect.

Had a chance to get out to the cat today. First thing I checked was the booster resevoir. There was no oil to be seen.. have to top that up. Yet the lack of oil would that hold the clutch open? Second, when I removed the cover holding the boots to the booster the boots were in two pieces. Below each boot was a wire ring, could these rings simply be from the boot bellows? I can't see any other reason for those rings to be there.

Ideas?

The rings are retainers for the boots (one piece)
Depends on how dry and for how long before clutch operation could be affected by the lack of oil. Manual operation of the clutches is back up in the case of hydraulic loss or failure but effort is considerably harder.

No, the clutch can be unbolted and lifted out the top using the brake band as a sling. However you will need to be able to move the tractor forward or back a little to rotate the steering clutch to get to all the bolts.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Is another one and done post? No activity since the original post by Dittmer. If you come back there is a lot more.
