They are usually an easy pull start (until you have spectators:rolleyes:  ). Initial traction might be a problem if it's been sitting a long time. Might do a trial run so's you don't loose a prospect.

Forgot about the bucket, you'll have to get that off the ground to have a decent chance at pulling.

I expect it may take quite a wrecker to pull it off and you probably don't want it following down the road after the wrecker digging up the surface. Maybe a farm tractor instead. Say 70 hp or better for some extra margin.
Yes, I know it can be done with less, but it also isn't starting well right now, so better to have some extra weight.

The rack is easy to access by opening the side cover of the injection pump housing.

Your mechanic isn't an investigator huh?

No,
Just wondered if the rack was actually stuck or not. Best way to tell is open it up and look, I guess.

A later series John Deere B will pull start a D2. Get her rolling and all the speed you can muster as it will dig down when you go from Start to Run.
Before I lost a piston, mine would start in about 10 feet.
An IH M series (equal to JD 70) will pull start a D4 same way.
Of course if these are all you have available, but bigger is definitely nicer!

The "U" series tractors with factory direct electric start and hand primer pumps have the relief valve mounted at the top (rear) side of the filter housing with the return line tied into the supply line. Some enterprising folks have realized that having the valve in this location provides filtration to the recirculated fuel unlike the one mounted on the inlet that allows recirculation of unfiltered crud through the transfer pump.

OM, "enterprising" meaning they figured out an easy change? Or they just figured out that if it comes on later models that have valve mted. on top rear, then it's a better filtration set-up?
Another question. Wonder how come some of these engines have return fuel to tank, & some like mine don't?
Actually, I've never noticed before I got my 9U, but I guess I always assumed that most diesel engines had returns to tank.
However, thinking on it, return to tank isn't needed as long as there's adequate fuel supply press. to the lift & injection pump. Hummmm
Anyway, just curious...thanks.

(Ps...Boy! It's been hot & dry round here. Sifting rocks & powdered sugar sand, even in lite breeze & squirting water, still makes my neighbors:mad::mad: )

Hi ttman4,
Enterprising in that someone realized they would get filtering of circulated fuel instead of just looping the suction line.
None of the "U" series had dedicated tank return lines. At least not from the factory;) ;)
With a little imagination I guess you could consider the supply line to be both as there was no check valve to prevent back flow.

Ya need a trip to the coast to cool off.....typical fog in the am burning off at about 11:00 temps in the 70's:D :D

OM is right the tractors didn,t normally have returns but the ones I remember that did have a return was on the industrial engines when the tank was lower than the engine.

I know it is a big investment, but if the tank is full the filter housing will bleed by gravity. Then the injection pumps can be worked up and down and the injection valves bled. Then she will start with a slight pull.
