D6D SA 5X pulling power

Picked up a D6D SA 5X1100 series tractor. Tractor has a 5 speed transmission and stock engine (non-variable horsepower).

Those of you farming with these tractors, what's the largest implement you've pulled? Really curious what this thing can do.

What's the process to increase the horsepower? Heard of guys turning these up to 250hp.

Thanks!

I have one of these units also. According to my notes, there were only 1356 of these units made. The tractor has the 3306 engine and the flywheel and drawbar horsepower of our machines is 240 and 188 respectively. Many of the 5x series had the "Liv-Powr" live hydraulics which was manufactured by the company with the same name. The "Variable Horsepower feature" was included with units made in 1983 & 1984 starting with serial numbers 1255 and up. At that time, the CAT dealer in our area could modify earlier machines with the option. A link to the CAT information with more information about the Variable Horsepower option is:

The biggest difference between the standard version and the VHP is the VHP has and aftercooled engine, increased cooling capacity, plus the fuel rack settings have been increased. Standard version was around 165hp at the flywheel and 125hp at the drawbar. Delta KJ has given you the specks on the VHP units.
The five speed transmission was a custom shop modification that Western States Cat dealers requested. Its is faster than the standard 6 speed. I have herd some of the VHP units being turned up over 300 hp, some of the guys did away with the rack changing setting on the transmission and left it turned up all the time. The high horse D6D is an impressive tractor. I would think if your considering modifying your tractor you should talk with Cat dealership in Spokane Washington.

That must be one smoking powerful D6 with it set up that high of HP. The 3306 OTR truck engine book I have shows it,s rated at 250 HP. I can,t see an after cooler on it from the picture but the 1674 shows one on it & is rated at 270HP.They both are the same displacement with 4.75" bore & 6" stroke but the 1674 is an OHC engine where the 3306 is a push rod job.

Congrats on your D6D!! I know of a D6D east of here that has been turned up to 300HP....the mechanic that told me about it says it rivals or exceeds the AG6...depends on your ground ( how steep?) you will be able to pull some pretty
big loads.....on like this, sixty feet of Caulkins Trash Masters ( seen here behind a D6C) would be childs play.....had a D6D here at SRS Ranches; i
loved that tractor and hated to see it go when the boss traded.

When the horsepower goes up the gearbox life is shortend considerably. I have seen g/boxes from VHP D6D's that have barely done 3000 hrs.

Cheers djcat.

DJ it stands to reason that if HP is doubled that oher parts are going to take a much harder beating & in this case as you stated is the tranny.Things are engineered for a certain load so to overload it something has to suffer the blow.

Yup, you guys couldn't be more right. The "D" pumped up to 300HP mentioned
above rocks WAY back in the sprockets when put under load....has broken bolts
in the equalizer spring. Ya pay yer money & ya take yer chances. Even left stock, nwfarmer, your D6D will out perform ANY wheel tractor with equal HP....
a way better way to hook up all that power...tracks. I like to kid my flatlander
friends..." Tracks Rule, Wheelies Drool" This picture is not one of mine...had it
sent to me. I think it is from down in California. A cool shot of a "D" with a 7 roller track frame, pulling a unique plow hitch, to say the least. Never did pull a set of triples....have done a lot of plowing with doubles however. When we
had a D6D, we paired it up with a IH "broken back" (hinged in the middle)
10 bottom plow ( 10 eighteens)
