A winch designed as a Cable Control Unit (ccu) won't really pull much, not the same as a towing/skidding winch. That's why there's usually a series of blocks to get the advantage necessary to lift things etc.

OK, CC. This is entirely new territory for me so a kind of a learning curve.

Only winching I have ever been involved in was years ago with my Uncle's Fordson Power Major when we recovered runaway tractors or stuck machines....but we're talking 20+yrs now

Hi Graham, hows you ? When i pulled the levers forward into the first notch nothing happened so i assumed that the drum was then in neutral with the brakes off but the middle position is obviously neutral and hold and then the closest position is wind in ? The cone cluthes do work but need adjusting. Regards Gordon.

hi Gordon ,i am good ,just had a few days in the isle of white
so feel a bit refreshed :D
yes you have it ,with the levers in the central position the drums are braked (hold)
pull them towards you will engage the cone clutches and release the brakes
the few times i have used mine ,it has been a bit temperamental
i think it is only through lack of use ,once everything is shined up
and adjusted properly it will work ok :D i just need enough time to get it that way
ps in five days away i received 2589 emails ,15 of which were of any good
cheers graham

As the others have pointed out Richard, its an Onions cable control unit, absolutely useless for winching, being very fast, and probably dangerous too as it only uses half inch cable, Find a little scraper for it.

hi Gordon ,yes it was nice to have a break
yes my C came from wadebridge and was owned by Sydney Jewell contractors ,i purchased it from Simon sandy at sedgemoor plant
who has a Rather interesting yard :D
i am not sure where he brought it ,but it had been sat for around 15 years
it has around 6000 hrs on the clock ,which could well be genuine
as the brake pedals etc still have all the knurling on them with no sign of wear ,it has genuine cat chains ,rollers and sprockets plus idlers at about 90%
the top rollers are from itstrac as the old ones had been flatspotted
the plates are from a trackmarshall 55 as the old ones were smooth and all loose when i got it
i guess it had been retracked ,but not enough funds for new plates
my mate put the murphy sticker on it ,they have put a new watermain across some of his land at Reading and he put it on as a joke
a couple of pictures of how i found it
cheers graham

Who used to make the cabs for the 4C & early 4Ds, the ones with the sliding doors & fibre-glass roofs? Is it a Leverton cab retro-fitted by the dealers?
