Heres one for you chaps, When we had the 931 941 951 955 977 We also had the 983 the D8 tracked shovel. How come it was known as the 983 way back then ? it would with that model number fit in with the current series would it not ? By the way i have operated the 977 over here (UK) on site clearance the way that performed id like to jockey the 983 !!! cheers Gordon.

Gordon the 983 was a Humongous Powershift Track Loader not a Hystat. We had a few around here, but Wally Spino out of Montreal ran a Fleet of them with side dump buckets. Half standard store bought buckets and Half custom self built buckets that dumped the other way. They where contract miners and used them at the end of the tunnel to load trucks. On a wide tunnel they had a pair of them loading from each side.

Hi Bob, yes i know, the 983 was basically a D8. My point was it was called a 983 back when it new. 9-3 series bering current. Also i wonder why there isn't a current 8 size shovel ? I came across a pair of 983's in the uk once parked side by side. Regards Gordon.

Gordon, I guess they didn't want to call it a 999. They had to stay with odd numbers as all track loaders where, 988 wouldn't fit in that pattern and they had a wheel loader with that number and the same engine as the 983. The old reliable D343.
