Hi all - my first dozer and im very "green" - can someone confirm the engine model? Was told D315 but I read they only came out in the 50s? Mine is listed as a 1942 model.

Id like to purchase the correct parts manual -

Thanks!

Greetings: I believe your engine model would be the 4400. What is the story behind your new dozer? Please share some photos if you may.
Not sure if Seiscat has any of the books in the library yet (for paid members).
You say "first". I like your style, that means more to follow! JM

The Operation and Maintenance Instructions (OMI), parts book and service manual (Serviceman's Reference Book) for your D4 7J are all in our ACMOC library. There are even sales brochures for the D4 in the library!
You need to be a paying member to access them.
The OMI has very useful info that will save you time & money
If you want a paper copy I found this one on eBay:

Please join our club as a paying member. I think you will also enjoy our quarterly magazine.

good info thanks!Well we have a small plot of land up in Redding and its been 4 years. I own a small marine repair and engine rebuild shop and have been too busy to stop and breath, shop rent is sucking all my hard earned $ away and honestly having a real hard time coping. Anyway- as i tend to pay my land lady all me income i have a non existent budget so found this guy 3 hours away and pulled the trigger.I know zip about dozers and its a real learning curve but im loving it - these old mechanical machines are so much fun to work on..I got the pony motor going last week, had to redo carb abd drill out lead plug for the idle passage - it was totally plugged, threaded and put in a stainless screw (not that these thigns idle right) - it fires right up.Spent 2 days cleaning the dirt and muck off this thing - it sat for near 30 years. Removed diesel tank, cleaned it with gas, flushed several times (there was black tar in the bottom), Removed the hard line and replaced with marine 3/8 line and an inline filter with sight glass just before the pump (pics to follow). So i cranked over the main motor and its turning and would pop but not run. I realized yesterday I did not bleed the fuel system properly as it was empty. My fuel filters look like old wool socks and seem to be relics from the titanic. I am unable to find part numbers but ordered an original parts book.Tore into the fuel system yesterday- the rack was a little bit stuck - removed the 4 pumps and am going to verify the TDC marks on the flywheel (apparently the flywheel doesnt have a dowel for alignment and its up to the installer to set it right!). So will be confirming that first via a dial gauge on the top of the piston and finding the middle of the piston dwell to compare with the scribe. From there il find the compression stroke and set the fuel plunger heights to spec so this machine can run on top shape.I have a water pump leak and so far the radiator seems to be holding up!Need new hydraulic lines and seal the rams, they are leaking - the previous mad scientist converted the rear pto pump to tilt the blades! so this is a frankenstein 4 way - up down and tilt.I learned yesterday the angle is set via the 2 large screws on each side - man do I wish I could convert that as well.one step at a time!I am shooting VERY amateur videos and many of you will find them VERY frustrating as im fiddling with seemingly obvious stuff trying to figure it out as best i can between my tools and the internet! Thanks for the replies! Its encouraging and ill be needing alot!I do want to address all the leaks, the rear pump, im presuming its a gravity system as the leaks seem to come between the tank and unit-Also are my rams seals or the rope style?

Oh oh, the Northstate has become the CAT world's black hole for old iron! (Just kidding) Hey, Crawler Addict, you have competition now! You have a fellow member nearby that shares the same enthusiasm as you. Me, I am just a low keyed person that likes having tractors to remind myself of yester years. I am south of you a couple plus hours in Sutter County.
Enjoy yourself. It is very easy to get "hooked" on collecting and the bonus is getting them operational.
Thanks for the photos and YT video. JM

This is going to be a fun thread to follow! In addition to the tech library manuals, there are several vids you’ll find helpful. YouTube “squatch253”, PNW Hillbilly, and LAOL. I’m sure there are more.

Best to you on your “journey” and keep safe.

Someone with more knowledge than I, or better parts books can verify this, but for my D4 6U the fuel filters are Napa #3825, about $25 each. Need 4. The gaskets are Napa #5635 but show as gas filters in the Napa books. They are a couple of bucks a piece. I think these are the same for the "J" model, but not sure. Napa stores are usually more common than Cat supply stores.
The Napa #3825 also cross references to WIX33825.
Grant.
