Here in the area years ago there were dozens of them around in drag lines and for other power, even locomotives. I have rebuilt dozens of them at the dealer years ago and they were made quite different than other engines of the era.They had one head for each cyliner and the top and bottom of the block were a two piece affair and the cylinder liners were housed in a block for two liners and the bottom crankcase was a one piece with the 4 cyl. blocks bolted to it.The 17000 was a V8 engine with a 90 degree block setup so was a little wider than the later V engines.The starting engine was across the back like the D 2,4, and 6s.Some early ones had two water pumps on them, one for each bank of the main engine.The loco. engines I did for a railroad Co. had an outside oil pump where normally they were inside like most other engines.The loco. engines I did didn,t have a starting engine but they motorized the generator in the loco. to turn them.We borrowed a starting engine setup from a coal strippings customer so it could be started and dyno tested.They weren,t a smooth running engine like most other Cat V engines esp. the later Vs.which had more balancing systems in them.
