You can likely find replacement guts for the generator, or just another 6v 18a generator to install. The oil cooler looks to be in good condition if that's its as-found state. I did not know that Cat still stocked D311 liners and pistons. I could be interested in a set myself. I have a set of D3400 liners and pistons for my 3J if I can ever get around to fitting them

you can do what im doing with our d4 turn the generator into a drive adapter. i gutted it, had a longer shaft keyed to take the drive gear and a taper lock vee pulley along with new bearings. the pulley lets me get the drive ratio to spin the alternator fast enough. and taper lock pulleys are easy to change. for some light duty applications dont need a keyway the taper lock grips good enough with a drop of 609 loctite.
i welded a bracket to take a 1 wire alternator so its self exciting and inbuilt regulator. this give me 12 volt electrics for lights and to charge the starting batteries when i get the new starting engine conversion completed.

Yeah, the plan is just to find another generator to install, my plan is to keep this thing as original as I can. The rad and oil cooler are in great shape from what I can tell, they need a good cleaning but don’t appear to have any sort of leaks on them.
I had some small victories this weekend, managed to break both engines free! Starting engine wasn’t toooo bad but the main engine took some doing. I tried all sorts of tricks including lighting the kerosene I dumped in the cylinders on fire, a breaker bar with 10 feet of cheater pipe on the end and my fatness hanging from it… In the end I took a chunk of birch firewood and turned it to just smaller diameter than the cylinder bore on my lathe and put it on top of the pistons I thought were stuck… a few let’s call ‘em gentle taps with my trusty sledge later they finally relinquished their hold and the engine turned. The #2 liner popped loose when the #4 piston started to move so after some more further persuading the #2 piston also freed up. Now the engine turns beautifully! I’m still going to tear it completely down, clean everything up real good and fix anything that needs fixing… overall I’m very happy I got both engines free! Next step will be to build an engine stand and take the engine out and apart…
Here’s some pictures and a link to the video I made…

I put new bearings and brushes in my 6v generator, had the commutator turned down and undercut, fitted a new regulator (they're cheap from ebay for regular-style but I fitted an electronic regulator for grins), and it was off to the races
