Do you know what they had mounted on those brackets on the right hand side? The broken side of the seat was probably due to the weight of the rear light constantly wobbling fatigued the metal out. I believe later models had the light(s) mounted on the fenders. The light switch is on the regulator on the generator. Brillman sells braided-looking wire that you can use to hook the lights back up again. The main thing to check on the generator is bearing wear and then corrosion. They can be cleaned up and relacquered and of course new brushes and turning / undercutting the commutator. One new thing you will want is a set of seat cushions. Hahn seats are the ones to get for quality but you can also make them up yourself by heading to the craft store for some foam and vinyl, and the hardware store for some plywood and staples.
I see you also have a JD 3xx or 4xx receiving some care and attention. You have the H3 which might suggest a 420 or 430 like I have.

Cheers,
Neil

Neil, that’s the remains of a John Deere 400 tractor, I have another one here that this one donated its organs to..l actually going to put that one up for sale to help finance the D2 project… nice little unit but I have no use for it…
Thanks for the tip on the wire, I was wondering how I could re-create the look of the old braided wire!
I’m hoping to have my shop clean enough that I can ,ove the D2 inside later today… tinkered a bitmwith it yesterday but nothing exciting, mostly just cleaning…

Just a little update… Finally had some time and got the D2 into the shop and built a shelf to put all the parts and pieces on. Haven’t done much to it yet other than drain all the fluids. Or should I say drain all the waters! Everything had at least some water in it but I’m not at all surprised seeing that it had sat outside for so many years. I did find that at least one of the steering clutches releases as I was able to turn it when I had both levers tied back. I took the bevel gear cover off the back and even though there was a ton of water in there virtually nothing is rusty in there! I didn’t take any pictures but I did upload another video on my youtube channel on what I found. When I start taking things apart I will take pictures and post them here.

Haven’t made all that much progress on the D2 yet, but I did manage to build myself a gantry crane so I can tear into it now and lift all the heavy pieces off. Hopefully I’ll have some D2 progress to report soon. In the mean time here’s a photo or 2 and a link to a video I put together of building the crane.

Thanks! Gantry crane worked excellent to lift the head off on Monday. It's actually not looking bad inside the engine, yes there's some rust but nowhere near the amount I was worried I'd find. Thankfully some forward thinking individual had dumped a bunch of light oil of some kind, maybe WD40 by the smell of it, down the exhaust and it seems to have prevented worse damage. I put some more ATF and kerosene in the cylinders and am gonna let it sit until I can work on it again, hopefully that'll help free things up.

Love it! Best thing you could have done to make working on that tractor easier and safer. I have two of those gantry cranes. Mine are Contrx 2Ton x8' wide models with round columns that can telescope to 12ft. One of them I bought a longer heavier beam and made it 10' wide So I can back my trailer under it. I have two hoists on them so you can roll heavy stuff over easily. I have a helper too but he's younger, my 6yr old grandson. I put up a small 900# Gorbel jib crane in the garage for him this year so he can work on his stuff. He's already used it to pull the blown up engine in an old Cub Cadet tractor a friend gave him. He dismantled it completely, cleaned and sandblasted the block and with my direction rebuilt it. I had to bore the cylinder .02" over but he did everything else.

Didn’t get much more done on the D2 in the last little while, managed to pull the radiator and oil cooler off… I went and pulled the generator off, turns out it’s nust a housing anymore, someone took all the guts out of it… not sure how the light would have worked with no generator but what do I know haha! I also cleaned the cylinder bores with a wire wheel where I could reach so that when/if I get the wngine free the pistons won’t get more damaged than they already are. At this point it looks like I’ll be investing in a full set of liners and pistons… amazingly enough they seem to be availabe through Cat still from what I’ve seen! Anyway, here’s a few pictures I took.
