Hi Angelo, I could only guess at the engine incl. pony weight (it can come out with the engine but you may need to remove the pony flywheel to get access to the top transmission to "bellhousing" bolts) but maybe 1500? Parts to replace - throwout bearing which is a bronze two-piece unit that you can get from John at General Gear along with the other clutch parts. If your spider linkage is loose, now's the time to swap out the pins and straps which are retained with split pins / cotter pins so you can renew all of those (if Tom helps, I know he'll replace all your cotter pins : ). While it's apart, inspect the transmission input bearing and seal. You can also put new cotter pins in the pony pinion adjuster screws and give it all a good lube

Cheers,
Neil

a 1 tonne chain block would be sufficient.

Listen Angelo, if I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times, I don't need new windows for a low, low monthly payment, and I'm not interested in a 90 minute presentation on real estate investment in Florida ; )
Apologies, I'll send you a better number. The house phone's a bit sketchy at the best of times

Cheers,
Neil

It isn’t that bad to remove the engine. Just get set up for it. The instructions are in the book.

Looks like Angelo will be making Crawler$$$ weekend plans for him now! Seriously, with decent tooling and space, an engine R/R is not that bad. As Neil said, you may as well check things out while it is apart. Have fun. JM

Thanks for all of the information guys. I have the correct Servicemen's Reference Book and have looked it over. Just two more questions (for now). 1. How did this happen? The machine ALWAYS shifted fine and never made any transmission area noise. 2. the book shows two different ways to remove the engine (early model and later model) What was the year of production that separates the two removal styles?

Looks like the two different engine removal instructions are, first one for the U model second for the J. The teeth on the clutch discs usually fail from a combination of wear to the plate, and crud build up between the teeth and flywheel, the U model bare engine is 1800 lbs, add radiator and fluids etc.
