Bad day at the tractor show!

Hi guys, I have a D2 5U (serial #6453) with a dry clutch. I was driving on a dirt road in 3rd gear with no implement behind me. All of a sudden, the machine quit going foreword. There was no bad noises to be heard when it quit propelling itself. I had to tow it back to the barn to try and figure things out. I took the cover pate off and did not see anything bad going on. Any ideas? Also, do I need to "split" the tractor to remover the clutch and throwout bearing? Thanks

I was just reading about the later 5Us and I think that your serial number is too early to pull the clutch without pulling the motor. I am no expert, but the article makes me think it was only the last few thousand U series that had the longer frame and removable clutch.
Had the clutch given you any trouble before this happened? Grant.

Does the D2 have thermoid couplings like the other Cats?
I would look and make sure before you pull the engine.

Yes you do have to pull the engine to access the clutch on that tractor.
If the clutch still feels like it snaps in as it should, it is probably the teeth on the clutch disc stripped off and a new clutch disc will be needed etc. You may be able to see in the access cover if the flywheel moves when the engine is turned over but the clutch does not when engaged.

Is it possible to wined the adjustment right off and replace the friction disc, I am not familiar with the Caterpillar set up, however on a Fiat you wined back the adjustment and the friction is in segments. very easy to replace, maybe just segment the Caterpillar friction and do the same.

Hi Angelo, start with some investigation first as a way to establish what's not working. Take off the clutch cover and have someone look in the hole while you put the tractor in gear and engage the clutch. If the flywheel is spinning : ) and the clutch pressure plate and spider are spinning but the transmission input shaft isn't, and given that you wrote that the clutch feels like it engages with the usual over-center snap, then it's most likely the clutch teeth (but could also be other things in the clutch. Either way, the clutch needs to come out and on your serial # as Josh wrote, the engine has to come out. If the transmission input shaft is spinning, then the problem is in the transmission (main, bevel, or final drives) or both steering clutches (highly unlikely that both fail simultaneously). Let us know what you find and we'll figure next steps.

Cheers,
Neil

Thanks for the advise guys. It looks like I will split the tractor. Some additional questions:
1. How much does the D2 engine weigh? I need to find the proper rated chain hoist. I have access to a HUGE  overhead hoisting frame.
2. Does the pony come out as a unit with the diesel? ( I have the shop manual but have not checked it out yet)
3. Parts to replace while I'm in there.....clutch plate, throwout bearing, re-surface pressure plate....what else?

Thanks to all of you for the help, Angelo
