Mike Hudson: You can always take the shortcut and point blank ask for advice on the Discussion page; there are others out there that have likely encountered the same issue with their own tractor and either dealt with it or hoping someone will raise their hand and "ask".
Sounds like your pinion latches could be out of adjustment or worn; grinding is also indicative of sticky clutch disks.
First step for a thrifty person such as me, I would drain the pinion clutch housing and flush it out; rather than do a tear down, use a lighter oil as a replacement to the 30wt that is normally used(ATF has become the choice for me). Many times cleaning and thinner oil eliminates the sticky disks...
The latch issue, I would open up the small 2' (round) access port or the top cover of the main clutch/transmission housing, and take a good look to see what the pinion and latches look like. Others will chime in how they dealt with grinding and non-engagement.
Hope this gives you something to read and start with! We love photos by the way, so if you or the wifey can post some, that would be awesome. JM

Thank you Mr Juice man. This help from a fellow owner operator is the best Library anywhere. I had actually flushed the pinion clutch with kerosene. Maybe not good enough. The pinion will latch if things are just right. I will remove covers and inspect. I know to remove the pinion requires pony removal. I wonder if the things in front of it need to be removed. I’m not Davy enough to remove injection stuff. I better go before somebody pins my ears back for rambling off topic. Thanks a million juice man

Glad to help with what little I have to offer. I preach to many, going the easiest and cheapest route is for me. You might only need to adjust one latch a half turn! Why show off to your spouse or friends that you can yank a pony or governor? LOL. Sure, you can do the full blown overhaul etc., I suppose it depends on how deep you wish to get into a project.
If anyone is guilty of rambling, that would be me! ***are you using 30wt oil or did you try the Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) ?*** You can 3x flush and then add some oil...
Keep us all updated with your progress. JM
