I used white oak because it is rot resistant and very tough. Have taken both tractors on a 5 mile run on pavement several times with no marks on the pavement and very little wear on the blocks.. Gravel is a little tough on them, but they seem to have held up well. They are stored inside on concrete so rot isn't a problem. Biggest expense is the bolts...

i'll have to try a bit of iron bark timber. or if i could get some gidgi that would work very well. its so tough it blunts axes, its almost impossible to cut with a axe.

Tell the officials to get over their fear. Paso Robles puts a whole fleet of Best, Holt, and Caterpillar tractor down main street ( Spring Street if you want to be correct) ever year. Come on over next weekend and watch the Pioneer Day Parade at 10 in the morning. I think this is the 90th but could be off a year or 2 as I think 1931 was the first. Several years it did not happen during WW2.
No special pads on the big Cats. They leave no more mark than the big steel wheels on Parrie tractors or steamers do. With in a week all the little scratch marks are gone until next year.
If I had better search skills, I would find Deas very good set of pictures of all the action from several years ago. They are on this board buried someplace.

it probably has a lot to do with the driver too and if they screw around on the spot or make a nice gentle turn. also condition of the bitumen would make a difference.

Since I have what is known as IRON OAK (Black Oak) on my property , and a friend with a mill, I think that I will do oak pads . Of course it depends on what mechanical crisis has me occupied before the parade comes around again. The local road dept. would go crazy over metal tracks on their old neglected streets. Grant.

The first time I took my Cat Ten to a tractor show and unloaded I immediately had a visit from the show organizer who proceeded to let me know I would be responsible for any damage to the pavement. A quick sweeping removed most of the marks, but he let me know that I couldn't participate in the tractor parade. The wood pads solved that problem. I might mention, hickory would probably be the toughest wood to use, but it will rot quickly if not kept on a dry concrete surface. White oak would be best if parked outside , or on dirt or gravel...
