I wonder then if the bushings are mostly worn on the outside and not the inside, otherwise the chain would be a lot longer if the idler position is an indicator of chain wear?

I'm pretty ignorant about the particulars of "modern" undercarriages. They're sealed tracks, not sure if that means sealed and greased, or if they're full blown SALT. Either way the internal wear should be relatively minimal as long as the seals are intact.

The tracks fitted to that D4 look like lubricated to me by the end plug, sealed only tracks would not have that and they are dry, the seals fail usually about half life. Sealed tracks are also commonly called squeakers because of the noise they make.

If you hear a squeak coming from lubricated tracks, you have a fry joint, another thing I always did was run my hand over the pin ends when stopping after a period of work, hot ends indicated a dry or near dry joint. The greatest enemy of lubricated tracks is over tension, will stuff them in only a few hours.

As expected it keeps getting more complicated. The company that I'd used in the past is out of business. I called a local company that wheels and deals in Caterpillar parts, they weren't sure if there's anyone around that even has a track press.

So after some conversations with various folks the consensus is that new chains are the only real solution. No one does track work in this area. Labor cost and the lack of component availability have made it impractical.

Did get a return call from the local company that deals in used Cat machinery, parts and salvage. In his opinion the D4E is realistically a $6,000 machine as it sits. Basically zero demand in this area. A few Amish or Mennonites west of us were running D5 crawlers but very few. He said it's not a machine they would buy for salvage as there's no demand, they have a few manual transmissions sitting in the yard that the haven't been able to sell. While I had him on the phone I did ask about the engine, it's not feasible to turbo. Pistons and valves are different, injection pump would have to be adjusted, etc.

Good call I think, you won't be annoyed by having good undercarriage that's for sure so all you'll have to do is forget what you pay for the new rails : ). I think it's wise to leave the engine alone too, because what realistically would you get from boosting it, especially if it's a "toy" as opposed to being a production machine. A bunch of cost and a few more ponies and maybe a bit less longevity, not to mention downtime while you're assembling it.
Would you mind sharing the name of the local company you mentioned as I'm looking for some D2 undercarriage parts and I'd like to see if they're someone I already called

Granger Tractor

I see quite a few D2's on Facebook for short money, but most of them look like the undercarriage is toast.

In regards the the D4E I'd agree with the turbo assessment. If I really needed the horsepower it would be money and effort ahead to buy a fire-breathing D5B from Zimmerman.

That might be a bit more difficult at the moment. Due to flooding and wet spring in California, crawlers have made a comeback. My rental fleet has just been depleted, and we even have requests for some lighter iron for customers that normally rent D6s and D5s from here.
If you reach out to member "D4e", (John) He might be able to locate one for you. Where are you located and provide specs, in case I see one available. JM

Might check Zimmerman in MO, I haven't looked for a bit, but they have commonly had some D4 C-D-E SA's around.
