Any of you guys know anyone running a D8L SA? Juiceman alerted me to one being sold last year on AgTrader (or whatever it's called) for $60k which seemed like a good price for a lot of traction. I got in touch with the seller asking for photos, videos, serial # etc. but the trail went cold. He sold it to his buddy who'd been lusting after it for years so I'm sure it'll live forever : )
Being the biggest official steel track SA they built I think, naturally I'm impressed : ) and I would really like to get some photos and videos of one of these units in action including using the remote hydraulics and the overdrive/clutch feathering control
Cheers,
Neil

Well! that's waaayyy outa my league. but thank you for posting that. i remember trying to climb some sandhills with an 830 two lunger pulling a light tandem disk with a 16-8 van brunt on behind the disk. even then the van brunt wasn't full. i think 5 bushels would fill the drill.

As several have mentioned, crawlers have their place. I rent several out to a good friend that farms along the Sacramento Delta area, from Freeport all the way south to Rio Vista. Many of the fields are under 200 acres and they spent a LOT of time moving iron on a daily basis. I convinced him to just "rent" mine and leave them at each location. Talk about a game changer... most of his "operators" prefer the old crawlers any day over the computerized DEF guzzling wheel tractors that they own. Fuel consumption is minimal compared to the big rubber tired monsters. A good example is one of the 17A D7s, it burns only 4.5 gallons of diesel per hour pulling an 18' drag disc, and drivers are happy with the smooth ride, compared to 4X4 burning 13 per hour and awkward to manuever.

Right on Gee😀. Snapped the picture below of my tenant planting corn with a small four-wheel-drive rig and it burns over 14 gallons per hour. Our land is as flat as a pancake with hardly any hills. I’m doing this on my phone so I’ll see if I can upload the picture.

Maybe he needs a smaller drill if it is that important to not wait another day to dry. But he could also go on the contour.

Man, that would be sweet JM running a D7 in a commercial ag operation, or any tracked machine for that matter. Old, clanky, slow, noisy, but still a ton of enjoyment. My nephew used to "operate" autosteers in Western Oz and their paddocks tend to be miles long, and he said it was the most boring job he ever had. He just spent all day on the internet, occasionally monitoring gauges

As far as running a D7 they may be a little old , a little clanky BUT if you are on a late turboed 17a with a fast transmission you will cover a lot of ground in a Day and as juiceman says on not a lot of fuel

the uncle worked for a composting contractor driving a compost turner turning and mixing manure at feed lots. and yes apart from checking the meter readings and listening for strange noises he would watch movies on a tablet or portable dvd player. the boss supplied the tablet. while working the machine only travelled at 5kmh the machine was gps steered

I would be very interested to see a study done of say one of JD's larger tractors, one with wheels, one with tracks to a pre-computer Cat tractor (or maybe the D8L has computers?) in terms of acreage covered per hour on tillage, operating costs including fuel and amortization of the unit which for the Cat would be the undercarriage. I suspect the fuel cost might be marginally per acre and the acres per hour might be lower too. But I'd want to see hard numbers on it.
