The weather is nice out again so I started working on my never-ending d6 project. I would call it a basket case but it came assembled lol. there are 7 rollers that need attention as you can move them up and down so I know the bushings are shot plus I'm sure there's some weld built up needed to get back to the right size. after taking off the spring cover I found out that my recoil spring is out passed the stops in the track frame and is ready to let fly. the adjusting rod has been welded in place under closer inspection, not a big deal I cut it out and make a new one. first, I got to safely fix the spring and get it back into control. I was thinking about making 2 heavy horse shows with 1' all thread and then just suck it downright till it's compressed again or so I can cut the tensioner bolt that welded and then remove and rework the spring and its mount as half of its missing and all 6 bolts are broke off in the track frame. Does anyone know how many tons one should be expending the spring to need to hold/compress it? this is off my d6-8U dry clutch

i dont know if any companies make spring compressors that large. although a friend of dads they had a i think it was a d6 that they got springs for and that was how they had been packaged 3/4 plate with high grade threaded rod to compress it.

When you say "tensioner bolt" do you mean the one up the inside of the spring? If so there are special brackets and clamps that need to be made to allow the spring to be safely clamped and the bolt replaced. If the bolt is still intact then you can use the bolt to remove the tension off the track idler.
All this is detailed in the Serviceman's reference book. If you don't have a copy take a look in the members Library.

thanks for your input. I do have the serviceman reference and will be reading up on how they safely deal with them. the second thing is I going to have to do is fix the "bad" rollers or mix and match new and old. I need to get the track's tension back off first then we go ahead and get the bad rollers out from under her and see what else pops up on me.

Let me know if your service reference book doesn't have the bracket details in it. The one in the members library does not have the info. Mine is for the 4R/5R but the track frames are the same.
What have they done to the top roller support frame? Looks like a rough fix?

PhilC yes the top roller "fix" dose seem a little ruff as with a few other thing on the cat I think this cat spent a fair amount of time in the bush or it was put together from other cats as there's been more than one thing that makes me wonder. the Y part of the the track frame that attaches under the cat has been broken on both sides and welded back together along with the main frame on the one side 2 out of the 3 are crack again. draw bar bolts are loos to the back of the transmission case plus the blade angle mounts have seen better days to say the least. the spring mastered 24 1/2" only a 1/8" longer than spec (both side match) so I think I will proceed with caution to take the spring out and star work on the other parts that need some love.

it looks like part of that top roller has broken off and is now hanging on the support shaft. that has definitely had a hard life.
