Ok .... Thanks Old Magnet
That makes sense and I will see what parts if any will interchange with the D315 pinion and clutches. I have three 955 D315 pinion clutches ready to go on the shelf.
12A3563, 12A4040, 12A8263
The 955E 12A8263 has a reversible fan I'm going to snag and put on the No12 8T

Don't think that's going to work, different fan hub part numbers and I don't think their the same size.

Not sure reliability or reputation but a web search gleaned this link. Manual looks legit…It looks like you have the parts book-maybe this will help.

Dan, no the clutch is not designed to disengage when the main engine starts. The only designed action is that the pinion latches release. The clutch will stay engaged. To be clear, you're talking about using the brake to stop the pinion spinning so that it can be engaged/latched with the flywheel in preparation for cranking right? That's the action that I mentioned is not that good even when in good shape. I refurbished the assembly on my 5U and when the oil is cold, it really doesn't do a good job of braking the pinion. Works marginally when the oil is hot. This particular brake is the cone type. I do have a disc type on my 3J but haven't had a chance to try it yet so I don't know how effective that brake is

Cheers,
Neil

Neal.... that is exactly what I was asking .
Old Magnet ..... well poo, I was hoping it would fit ... I may try turning the fan over on the D318 to make it blow the other direction

Great info
Thanks everyone

That doesn't work either. You would have to find an actual blower fan.

Batting a 1000 here ... but that's okay because you have saved me at least 100 hours of work.
Looked at the 9K pinion clutch disk (3B5471) and pressure (2A3616) disk P/N's and they are the same as the 8T but I'll look on to see if anyone here has some extras for sale before I go snagging parts off the 9K..
Thanks again

]Hey FD-
See search for “squatch’s” vid on disc compression D2 D4 which may illustrate a few of your issues. If I can get the link to attach I’ll do that.

Photo is of search path to link in tech library. May not be useful but still a cool video.

keywords “pinion clutch”

Dan, change the oil in the clutch compartment to ATF. It will solve all of your issues.

ATF did the trick.....Thanks, .....It is not like a set of disk breaks but it dose have some drag to help engage the pinion.
