Pinion clutch break ?

More
2 years 9 months ago #235680 by Fat Dan
The pinion clutch break on my 8T Motor Grader (8T14759) dose NOT slow the clutch down to help engagement. Is there an adjustment on the clutch break?
My pinion clutch has the cone type Collar (3H5946). After slowing the pony motor to an idle, pulling the break does nothing to slow the clutch nor idle speed (like nothing is there). Thus making me grind the clutch to engage.

From Tech Library D42T etc Ops Manual page 54:

Does the clutch have a distinct snap when handle is engaged? If not, my D4 2T has a collar you can turn through the fill port if I’m following. Should be 2A4089 with a locking pin. Use a screwdriver-a little goes a long way.

Thanks bernie for your response. Dose the adjustment on the spider assembly adjust both the break collar and the pinion clutches?
I'll go out and look tomorrow
Thinks.

No just the engagement clutch, not the brake, did you check or change the oil in the housing?

Dan, change the oil in the clutch compartment to ATF. It will solve all of your issues.

My (limited) experience is that if the discs are doing there job and not worn the adjustment shown should give you the brake you need to engage the pinion. The only pinion adjustment I can think of from the outside without replacing parts or rebuilding it are with the latch screws. This does not seem to be your issue.

I had mine apart (clutch and pinion) in 2020 and have some photos I will look for. As info, I did not replace my clutch discs with that project. I did review Squatch's videos on Youtube and attempted to concave the discs with no success, so I put them back flat and have no issues with the engagement of the system. If you take it out, I used a PTO Universal spline shaft to hold in place on the vice to keep it from moving and to not damage anything. Again, this is for my D42T-not sure if your 8T is the same. I looked for a parts book on it and was unable to find one to compare.

If there is wear in the selector components, you will lose some motion. First thing is adjust per the manual, then test. Note that the brake is not that effective at the best of times so you have to lean on it a fair bit, and if the oil is cold, the effectiveness is reduced further

Cheers,

Rome K/G . Yes, I changed the oil in the pinion clutch... eeek. 30W ... I haven't looked in a few weeks. I'll try ATF
kracked1 ... ATF okay ... when I first got the 8T I drained the oil out of the pinion and filled it with 30W😱
bernie ... Thanks for your response. The pinion breaks don't look the same but they both do work on friction ......
neal ...... I put some heft on the lever for a bit and I didn't notice much difference ..
The selector components are tight and the sleeve latches are letting go when the diesel starts, however, the selector dose not kick itself out of the clutches when the diesel starts. It is supposed to pull itself back and release from the clutches?
SPIT BALLING HERE.
Wonder if I backed the spider ass. off one notch ...It might be too tight ... and not moving back far enough to touch the break.?
Thanks everyone
