Steve - the reason for using the Cat DW-6's they have good drawbar power. They were used to pull the cane wagons out of the fields to the loading ramps for the highway trucks. They would pull a train of wagons out.
USSC was a large customer to Cat. By using the DW-6's they had parts comonality. This all started with the 9U D-6 and continued through the 44A D-6B. Time frame, late 50's & early 60's. USSC was a high usage customer of D-4 & D-5 SA (Special Application)tractors. In the heyday of sugar cane in S.FL there was a half million acres of cane in the ground. The DW-6's did give way to more productive all wheel drive ag tractors as time moved on.

Attached are some pictures of starting my D6 for the the first time. After a day of changing fluids upon it's arrival, we decided to pull it across the field a time or two or three. Lesson #1 is it's hard to start a machine in 20 degree weather after it's been sitting 20 years. But I couldn't wait until spring and after a couple passes she finally fired.

This is a postcard showing D6B 44a's lined up outside the dealership in Clewiston, FL.

JEY - this building should look familiar.

I thought I'd just say the Cat in Deas Plant's first picture is still sitting at the same location (more weeds around it now) as of last week. Steve.
