My Dad got me a 5 gal bucket of Citgo 50w. It says right on the bucket it meets Caterpillar TO-2 spec.
In my operator's manual, it says to use LO oil for the final drives. Then when I look at the notes, it classifies LO oil as Engine Service Classification CC, MIL-L-2104B or MIL-L46152 CD or CD/TO-2.

OM all statments were referring to the orginal question about the finals on a CAT D6C, however some of the life issues I made also applied to results with the D6D.
Usually when the cats made it back to the main shop for service both the bearings and gears would have been destroyed, its like what came first the chicken or the egg. I have seen the bearings locked up by shavings and the shafts destroyed by turning inside the race and the gears destroyed by missalingment when the bearing goes out.

Hi CR,
Did you ever have any professional failure mode analysis done on these units. There are ways to tell what the series of events would be. Also wonder if bearing adjustments were attended to as part of the maintenance service.
Far to common to hear about "operators" that drive to destruction, especially in the Ag world.

Failure anlysis, yes of course, this is where the 50W recomendation came out of.
Bearing adjustments, durring the heavy ripping season its about 2 notches everyother week when the tractor is serviced.
I don't think you realize how hard this equipment is ran to go over 5,000 hours per year. These tractors are never shut off for weeks at a time.
