Cat ten / big fifteen engine rebuild

More

Can anyone give me a reasonable estimate on the cost of a complete rebuild on a Cat ten / big fifteen engine?

Just looking for a ball park guess before I make some decisions.

Thanks.

I did a 7C engine a few years ago and did all the work myself for $33.00 and that was for the rings from Hastings. My 28 was a little more, ~$375 for rings but thats because of the odd bore 4-3/16'' and I did my own babbitt pouring. Made my own valve guides for about $50 for the bronze and reground valves and seats. Neither engine needed sleaved and the cranks weren't too bad. I made my own piston pins from pins that were a little over sized and honed piston to fit. I also made new bronze bushings in rods and honed them to fit . I also made all my gaskets except for some cork push rod tube (28 engine) that I bought from Olson's

As you can see, there are a lot of variables to this. It depends on the condition of the engine and what kind of machanical skills and available tools you have. One thing is for sure, if the engine is stuck or has a lot of wear, it can potentially get expensive.

Steve,

Mulitply all of your time spent doing what you had to do time $80.00 an hour to cover your time and your machining machines. That is probably a low hourly rate. If you need valves, you can get into a couple hundred bucks for them, Checking block and heads for cracks, cooking the parts in the oven, refinishing the head and block, engine rings for a ten cost me nearly 200.00 for all of them, etc. Gasket set for olsons is around 100.00

Replied by drujinin on topic Concerning TEN rings
Is Hastings the only supplier?
Can they find them just asking for rings for a CAT 10?
Or do they need an engine series number?
Thanks!

$600 for 4 sleves installed in my small 15 and I believe olsens gaskets were closer to $200 with the radiator top and botton included, 8 new eaton valves and work modify the valve stems, on and on and on

Steve,

What did you do for the rod bearings?

Can you buy an insert type bearing or do you have to rebabbit them?
