Got out there today and replaced the pressure relief valve, put some cat coolant flush in there and poked around making a mess for an hour or so. It didnt get hot (was at operating temperature), but it was cold today and i wasnt pushing very hard.

Pulled the thermostat housing to have a look and found 1 thermostat and one odd ring thing. Parts book tells me it should be 2 thermostats. Any reason why this other thing would be in there? Thoughts?

When shifting, try just bringing the rpms down to half rather than all the way down to idle, then pause a second in neutral before selecting a gear. This puts less load on the engine when trying to bring engine up to full load rpm. Better for converter and engine and saves fuel.


-not to hijack thread...but...would that apply to standard shift dozers as well? bring engine RPM halfway down and engage clutch and release decelerator pedal..?

always dropping GOLD, all you have to do is just pick it UP !

No, it doesn't apply to normal direct drive machines but it was certainly recommended with torque converter transmissions.

I couldn't see anything down there. That lip where it's been attacked was at the top, that lip isn't on the other thermostat. Unless it's an older/newer design or something.

I suppose I'm just wondering if there was an instruction from CAT about removing one and putting this ring in. If there was just 1 completely missing i would just put 2 in as per the parts book, but this makes me scratch my head a bit...

So using the Decelerator peddle only push it 1/2 way? or is it an adjustment in the peddle itself?

Yea I would put the two correct regulators in, that ring is from an older style regulator.
Yea just push the deaccelerator half way or so, its mostly by the sound of the engine rpms, just slow it down enough for a smooth shift but keep the rpms up. Like I said pause a second between forward or reverse. You'll get the hang of it after awhile.

Hi, Misterskill.
Another approach to shifting a powershift transmission - neither 'righter' nor 'wronger' than Rome K/G's , just different. I pretty much always push the decelerator right down while applying a brake to stop the machine but make the change well before the revs have completely dropped off and let the decelerator back up again.

When pushing uphill, it is often possible to change without using the decelerator at all by shifting to neutral, waiting until the machine is rolling backwards and then engaging reverse. Ditto when backing up a slope and shifting to forward.

For me, the 'golden rool' has always been to be aware of what effects the way you are operating is having on the machine and develop techniques to minimize wear and tear and shocks. If you feel the machine is being rough on you, itza pretty fair bet that you are being rough on the machine.

Maybe someone had overheating problems and tried to fix by removing one thermostat. Can be counter productive allowing coolant to flow too quickly in some aplications.
