I have heard the name Glyptol used before, I think it's normally used as an electrical component case paint. Seems I've heard it used in car magazines, when painting lifter valleys and the inside of engine blocks.
Hope this helps,

The EASTWOOD COMPANY carries it.

Here is a short discussion about its 'benefits'.

I have used cat yellow primer for the inside of oil pans and trans cases. does not chip, flake or dissolve.

I have been using the Red 1201 Glyptal and works fine but would prefer a lighter color but there does not seem to be much choice.
www.glyptal.com/Glyptal_Product_Data_Sheets.htm

Also found a material specifically for this use (color is clear)
www.microleak.com/brochnew.htm

I'm still curious as to what material Cat would have had access to at the time.
Even my old "Cletrac" has a seal coat of some type (1938) model.

Thanks for all the inputs:) :)

Somehow I suspect that they used plain old nitrocellulose lacquer. Yellow pigment added to get the color.

I have been using Glyptol which is made by G.E. for use on electric motor windings. I have used it in the heads block and air intake passages on a Cat 1160 engine that now has about 400,000 miles on it. Also I used it in a Rockwell 221 transfer case with 250,000 miles with synthetic gear oil. I have never heard of any lifting of the paint, but I have been picky about getting everything clean and dry. You can also get it in rattle cans to spray in those hard to get to places. Good luck. You sure know how to overhaul a cat.
