I have a service man's reference book but it doesn't give any specs on pump clearance. Any idea what they are. Also the drive gear moves forward and backwards as you work the clutch handle. I didn't measure how much but I'd guess around 1/4" both ways. Is this normal?
Thanks Jesse

Movement of the gear axially is expected as it is mounted to the clutch loading plate and moves when engaging/disengaging the clutch. On that gear pump side clearance (total) expected new would be on the order of 0.0005 to 0.001 in. Gear tip to housing would be about 0.001. If you have 0.004 to 0.005 in. or more the pump is worn out.
You can recover side clearance by refacing the cover but there is no recovery for gear tooth to housing unless you can find oversize gears.

Well it turned out my new gears were around 20 thousand bigger then the old gears. Which gave me basically 0 clearance on the gear tips to housing. All I can figure is when it got hot everything grew and it locked up twisting my shaft off. Had a new shaft made and some filing on the gear tips and its back together pumping oil great. Also faced the housing...
Thanks for the help Jesse
