Deas,
I have frequently heard about the head cracking problem and jet heads that you mention, but never really knew the details of the problem or the function of jet heads. The guy that told me about the small water tank made it sound like it was just to raise the coolant level to compensate for tractor pitch. He described the problem as the out of level condition causing overheating, although that does not seem likely.
He also indicated that it was only a problem with the TD-24. Was that small tank only on the TD-24s? The guy who told me this seemed to be speaking from his experience as being a dealer, so I am not sure that he had this completely understood. He made it sound like the little tank was his idea to solve a problem.
In any case, that huge mockup dozer sure looks like they had some big plans for the TD-24.

Deas - Unfortunately that tag is blurry even in the original photo. I think you are right though, it is explaining the function of that lever. I can't really make the words out, but if I had to make a bet what the top part says, I think "TRANSMISSION CONTROL" would be a safe one. I agree it makes sense that the levers would still be used for steering, but the "tiller" would be used for speed and direction. I also noticed the lever, that I am guessing is the throttle, is nearly identical to the one in the TD-24 control picture you posted.
Anybody know if there is an IH forum where someone might have some insight into this?
Dave

Hi, Dave Tallon.

You have to be registered to post, like here, but it's free. Do you want to register there and post your question and photos or should I go there and post a link to this thread?
Your choice.
I agree about the throttle. What I didn't see was anything that looked like it might be a decompressor lever to enable it to start on gas like the early IH diesels. Also, I am still scratching my head about those 2 odd-looking 'caps' with the handles on them to the left of the throttle lever.
Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Deas - If you could post a link over there, it would be great to get their input. Who knows, we may even attract a few new people to our BB that way.
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Deas, Those two odd looking caps by the throttle lever are where you stick the ether start capsules, hence the reason why you can't see any evidence of a gas start system, so the engine should have no head cracking problems due to the variable compression system.

Dave I have sent the photos to a friend of mine that does research on IH equipment see what he says.
You may want to do a search at the Wisconsin Historical Society as they have the bulk of the IH archives.

I would reckon that the engine is an early prototype of the 817 cu in that was used in the 25s when they came out and would have been direct electric start on diesel.

Pic 4 shows what appears to be a turbocharger connected to an air cleaner at the front of the machine which is what the front pipe is sticking up through the bonnet, it be the air intake, just hasn't got a pre cleaner on it. I would say its based on a 24 but a bit experimental, a cross between a 24& 25.
