Old Iron Habit, I think we have the knowledge on push loading well sorted, this tractor set is ready to double push scrapers, it's what it was built for and hopefully it will work well, this set is all hooked through the main chassis no loading is placed onto the dead shafts other than turning tracks.

Hi, O-I-H.
I don't think you need to worry your delicate, grey-haired head overly much about the dead axles in these tractors. The set-up was designed by Buster Peterson of Peterson Tractors Special Products Division. I just sorta vaguely suspect that he may possibly have had a slight idea of exactly how delicate his design DIDN'T need to be. Here are some links for your perusal.

The Quad D9 draught assembly:

A list of Buster's patents:

And the patent for the Collins ripper to work with the Quad D9s:

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Good to hear that it is dual purpose and was built to be a push Cat. I only brought it up because it was mentioned that the parts came from a DD9 set up to pull a plow. I'll sleep better now knowing that this has all been looked at by brilliant minds and is in top kit as they say. I look forward to seeing the smoke as it pushes.

Deas, Your link details the pull forces transfering power from the front Cat directly to the ripper for pulling. I assume that somewhere else in a different patent the front machine modifications to take the push from the back machine is detailed. It does not look like Cat bought that patent, it was not listed in the Cat purchsed patents. Makes sense as they went to a D10 instead.

This Quad 9 is fitted with a push button on the back tractor ready for a 3 tractor incident at some point, I do have some place a photo of 6 D9G's all hanging out of the back of a 657 that I will dig out, it was taken on a U.K. site in around 1967.

Hi, O-I-H.
The Collins ripper draught beams were attached to a cross beam welded to the push frame for the rear tractor, just ahead of the tracks of the rear tractor. This photo doesn't show the ripper mounting cross beam but you can see where it would be welded on.

Here are a couple of photos of the Collins ripper:

A couple of photos of the two main sections of the hitch arrangement.

And a photo of a ripper arrangement that I understand they had to quit using 'cos it did 'mischievious' things to the back end of the rear tractor:

Does that help? A kew-ree-yuss mined would like to know.
