I am very familar with the 15 Trailer Patrol as Chapter One owns one along with the RD 6 Cat that pulls it. We acquired the unit from a Special Road District up in NW MO. I have been through the power control box on the RD 6. Yes the blade lifts are screw jacks that were also used on No 10 and 11 motor graders.
Where in Kansas are you located? You mentioned that the model D came from Brown CO. Kansas. I was born in Doniphan Co., the county just east of Brown. I am part of chapter One, located in the Kansas City area. We represent all of Kansas, Mo., and now some of the remaining members of the Neb. club have joined with us.
You have a very rare tractor, possibly the only "One of a kind" left. Years ago I read in the Two Cylinder magazine that Neb. had purschaced quite a few of those D's and 15 Trailer Patrols.
Call me or E-mail me and we'll talk. Bill Walter, 816 805 1834, E-mail, <a href="This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it." target="_blank">This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Eric Just making sure, the mechanical lift is generic? Like a hydraulic ram today, could be on any make of machine,or other than a grader. Or is it just any grader from that time that had the power lift was the same mechanism.

So the lift is made by someone other than Cat or the grader maker they bought?

Cat made the parts for the lift. Cat purchased Russell grader Co in 1928 and used many of those designs in the Caterpillar grader lineup.

Bill thanks for replying, I live in Marshall Co. The D's you are referring to I believe were 1931 model D's destined to be power units for Hawkeye motor patrol? Quite a few D industrials were shipped to Kansas and also the Kansas City branch. I took my JD BI and Cat no. 4 Hi way patrol to Lathrop, Mo. show several years ago and I believe your chapter had a display there also. Looks like I need to join your chapter and also the ACMOC. I'll try and contact you this week.

CHFarms, would it be possible to post a video of your unit in operation, including detail shots of the tractor PTO being used (up and down, both shafts)

Cheers,

Neil I wish I could but I have not began restoration yet. The power control for the grader had been removed and laid out so not sure what it might all need. I just got the trailer patrol home a couple weeks or so ago so still will have to locate some items it needs.

Ah apologies - I thought the black and white photos were of another set you had. Offer still stands though for once you get it going. : )

Ron I bought this tractor back in 1994 on a farm sale, what history I could find out was that the tractor was purchased new by a township in Brown Co. Kansas and later was bought at sometime by the farmer that had the auction. I was told by an older gentleman that had been on the township board that the D was used to maintain their roads. I always hoped to find a patrol that would be paired with the D. This winter I happened to see this one on craigslist and bought it. I know of 1 other D with the dual pto and have heard of one maybe in California but have not confirmed it yet.

I am in California and I own a Model DI John Deere AND the Cat Trailer Patrol grader that was originally sold with the tractor. The tractor and grader were originally sold as a pair from a local Cat dealer to Madera county road department. I have not seen one (other than in old pics) hooked up together. I would really appreciate any and all info I can get on both the tractor and the grader. They are both 1936 models. I am restoring the tractor now. Grader to follow.

Mcclam, could we prevail upon you to post some pictures of your units from various angles and close-ups of the good bits? We love pictures on this site! (serial #s too). Videos are always welcome. We have a lot of members in CA who I'm sure would be very interested in looking at your combination, and we have a few shows that you'd be welcome to visit and maybe even bring your units for static or operating display. The Best of the West is a big show in May in Santa Margarita where you'd see a lot of interesting equipment.

Cheers,
Neil

I second Neil's idea to encourage you to bring both units over to the ACMOC National Show over Memorial Day at Santa Margarita. If these are as rare as everyone says, then that is just what we're looking for. There's still three months to go. Bring them over!
