Mfg Dates 1936-1939
4 Cylinders
5 3/4" bore

4090 lbs. weight (engine only, dry)
When Diesel first came out it was not always the same quality and often times would get contaminated,
so one way to remind the person filling the tank was to put one last "caution" on the cap to help save from possible problems later.

sawatzky - I think that was pretty much the standard fuel cap from the early thirties through about 1960. They all had that same text cast in the same letters, just about. The very early ones were brass, as Erik's is, with the thinner cast grip lugs on them. Most were aluminum and had thicker grip lugs that were more of a rounded rectangle.
Incidentally, International used just about an identical aluminum cap for about the same time period. They say the same thing, look the same and have the same shape. I always wondered about that. You'd think one or the other of the two companies would have been crying trademark infringement. I have seen a number of caps from other manufacturers with the same phrase, but the cap was shaped differently, was a different size and the casting and shapes of the letters was different.
I think it is pretty much as Erik has stated, during this period fuel specifications and the supply chain were much looser, there was lots of contamination and frankly, these engines were pretty much designed to run on bunker fuel, kerosene and anything in between. Out here in California, I think we could scoop up some stuff from the oil seeps and the engines would likely run on it. It is just a matter of how quickly the fuel filters plug up, hence the warnings.

Thanks for that explaination. Can you tell me are those caps available in reproduction or would I need to look for a NOS or salvage unit?

Ok guys, I was so impressed with Eriks power unit that I found one just like it! only it is missing the hood. So if anyone had a hood to fit, part # unknown please let me know. Thanks
