That is a really beautiful restoration. With all the shiny yellow, highlighted by just enough polished metal on the SS pump shaft, magneto and other jewelry, it just looks like a work of art.
The comment from the sawmill guy is funny. Not often you hear that the operator wants a Detroit because it is loud. Usually everyone is griping about the DD screaming away!
Thanks for sharing the before and after.
Pete.

Not sure the complete history of this engine but it has worked at two saw mills over the past 50 years. The last owner did not like it as much as his Detroit Diesel because he could not hear the engine while "in the cut". He liked to hear the engine lug down to let him know if he was sawing to fast.
Two sawmills you say? One of those mills wouldn't have happened to have been in S.C. would it? If so, is there any way to tell if that pony motor came off a 1H series D-8?

Great job on the power unit, Erik. I would love to have one of those on our mill, just haven't found the right one yet. It's funny how the one guy didn't like it for running his mill, I've always preferred to listen to the sound of the blade as it cuts through the log, that to me is a better indicator of how efficiently the mill is operating but then again we've got ours set up with plenty of power so over working the engine is the least of our worries.

grate job on the restoration , it will be a good comparison to the best power unit you have ! The best part of the 8800 is that original brass fuel cap . BTW what is the s.n. on the best 30 power unit or did they not have them ?

Scott,
it is a 1923 #4514, from what i have been told each engine coming or the line was given a # no matter if it went into a tractor or into a stationary power unit.
Everyone,
It is really nice to hear all the wonderful comments it means so much because I know that all of you know what you are looking at!
Most of the time people around here say "now isn't that cute" or "that sure is a pretty yellow",
I know they mean well but they can not fully appreciate it because they have no clue about what they are looking at.
Thanks Again!

Very nice restoration. I have 2 questions. What would the horse power at the belt pulley been? Also on the fuel cap I have seen the words before. Is there a story behind those instruction and did the diesel tractors use the same type of cap? For some reason it seems like Dad's D-4 had the same words on it.
