Actally oil won't harm the clutch, Holt Bros tractor used to re-machine the clutch housing to seal up every linkage and hole and fill the housing with hydraulic oil, basically making an oil bath clutch. The main problem is the stock clutch brake won't work with oil and there seems to be issues with holding oil on the eairler models.

Interesting point: does anyone know if there is a clutch facing that one could use instead of the regular facing that would enable the clutch compartment to be filled (to some level) with oil, and what type of oil might be appropriate. I'm thinking of the main and steering clutches on a D2 for example. My old 22 has a stuck main clutch mostly from sitting for too long. It'd be great if I could run oil in that compartment so that it wouldn't stick.
Thoughts?
Cheers,
Neil.

I have 4 d4's that have been converted, the main problem is holding oil on the older models.
The steering clutch compartment must be dry due to the steering brakes mounted lower in the same housing that must be dry.
The shift brake on the main clutch was changed to a different type of lining
