Just checking my understanding. You have read post 28 in the replies here and adjusted master clutch as per the instruction? And now your trying to extra travel out of the linkage, or is there something else your trying to do.

Ray54,
Yes to the question about post #28. The mechanic wants that to be plan B, if adjusting the linkage does not work. He is hands on with the machine, and thinks adjusting the linkage might do the trick. If not, then to plan B, per post #28. Is there any harm to trying a shorter yoke to give more adjustment? I have one ordered from the local heavy duty parts house and will be here in a couple of days. Do not hesitate to give me any information that might be helpful. The mechanic has worked on a lot of older machines, and I want to be respectful to him, but will guide him away if necessary. He was mistaken on the control box being hydraulic vs. mechanical, but believed it when he stuck his finger in the box and smelled gear oil. He knows I am getting information here, and is very mindful of the knowledge you guys represent. I thank each of you for your help so far.

Step 1, fire your supposed mechanic. You were told the correct way to do it. Your way is going to do nothing but cause more issues. You ask for help because you lack knowledge, you are given proper info, yet choose to ignore the help that was given.

Signman, what kracked is telling you : ) is that the manual specifies how to do it - not conjecture. Follow the instructions in the manual first and foremost - if conditions prevent that (because of broken components or maladjusted other components [like that rod and yoke assembly]), then come back here for further instructions (and by all means have the mechanic in on the conversation so that he is on board). 99% of these issues are corrected by following the manual's instructions.

Cheers,
Neil

Hi, Evans.
It is very likely WW2 era and probably ex-U.S. Army or Seabees. Likely someone with more exact information will come along and blow me out of the water.

There is a lot of information, both on the BB and in the Tech, library about maintaining and adjusting these old girls. If you have the 'good oil', there izza LOTTT that you can do to make them easier to work with - - - and easier on your favourite lunch hooks.

You might like to take a wander through some of this stuff.

This machine was built in late 1945. Must be near one of the last 9K's built. 75 HP, D4600 engine. Direct Drive. Weight is 22,000 LBS. Produced from 1938-1945.

Hi, Evans.
I actually operated a 9K series Cat 12 for about three weeks back in mid-1965 doing some serious 'final trim' work on a 250 acre farm in the South-west of Western Australia. I put 'final trim' on almost the entire 250 acres - - - with a set of 12-foot offset tandem discs - twice over.

That was the beginning of my experience with graders.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
