Good pics, I have a similar set, my wife & I rode the C&T last August, very much worth it, other than the accomodations in Antonito-I would recommend staying in Chama if possible...I wouldn't mind doing it again, starting in Chama, but my wife is more of the "seen one train, you've seen 'em all" school of thought. We have been on the Durango-Silverton about 3 times, when the kids were small. Glad to hear you are thinking of moving away from the "Dark Side", my son lives in Golden, & a couple visits a year are enough Front Range for me...there's a lot of old iron, yellow & other, on the west slope, if you know where to look-
Ron in CO...

Ron, this fall I will be looking for a "new" home away from the Front Range - with a couple of exceptions, such as Rollinsville/Nederland and Pubelo. I'll chat with Fred Lowry (or is it ery?) about Salida, will look over possibly Alamosa, then Pagosa Springs, perhaps other places. Wish you could see more trains! GWH

Thanks for posting the great pics George!! I thought the west half of the train ride was much more spectacular than the east half. It has been ten years since we last rode the Cumbres Toltec.
I always felt like that if all the passengers sat on one side of the narrow gauge coaches that they might tip over!!

D4 Jim, the west half is more spectacular, but the east half has its charms too. If you want spectacular, the Durango to Silverton ride is the ticket, with the Animas River far below and very, very close. GWH

I had the pleasure in 1978 to ride this train, definately one unforgettable experience. We took a shuttle to Antonito and rode the train back to Chama. Part of the movie "Bite the bullet" was filmed there and some of the props used are still there. I recommend this trip to one and all!

Yeah, the D & S is quite a ride also. That view from lovers leap or whatever the cliff area is called is really spectacular!! Makes me want to go again on both of them!!
The drive on up north to Ouray is really neat too.
