1941 Caterpillar D4 Dozer With Hyster D4 Winch For Sale

This is for a complete 1941 Caterpillar D4 Bulldozer, equipped with the Hyster D4 Winch option.  It has a gasoline powered pony motor to start it and warm it up. The dozer was not running when we bought it. It had been sitting for a while and the motor was frozen. We freed up the motor and ran it for several years to build about 600 feet of road in Northern Vermont.  It did smoke a bit but always got the job done. There were a lot of granite boulders to be moved, some larger than the dozer. Fortunately, this Cat dozer came with a Hyster D4 winch and it worked flawlessly. These winches are very rugged and heavy. Once the road was built, we changed over to backhoe activity and have never really needed the dozer for over a decade. So, we have decided to sell it. It appears to be frozen again from just sitting. The location is in Northern Vermont at our vacation homes and will be a bit difficult to remove, as it is at the bottom of a 600' downhill driveway that takes 4WD to go back up, although 2WD dump trucks have made it up.

A nice gentleman recommended that we advertise the Dozer on this website, as he stated that it is very rare for a Dozer of this vintage to be this complete.  He also said it would be a shame to part out any of this dozer rout before seeing if one of the Cat collectors on this website may want it complete, for an antique restoration project.

So, we are asking $6,900 for the complete package of the D4 Bull dozer and attached Hyster D4 Winch.

Ideally, we would like to sell the complete D4 Dozer by June of 2023.  If it does not sell by then, we may be open to parting it out provided the first two large items are committed to as follows:

Hyster D4 Winch:  $4,000
Complete Pony Motor:  $2,500

If interested, or if you have more questions, feel free to email me at this ad or call me at my phone number of 860-741-0049.  No texts as it is a land line.

We also have numerous spare parts for this Dozer like a hydraulic ram, etc.

Thanks for your interest!

Seems pretty pricey for a non running dozer

And non Cat blade. Plus undercarriage looks sad.

The winch and the pony motor are not nearly worth as much as you're asking. The winch is more like in the 1-2k range, probably on the low end given where it is located meaning that shipping is a significant factor. Pony motors are a dime a dozen - scrap value only. What is worth money on a tracked machine is the undercarriage; tracks, sprockets, rollers, and idlers. The value of this type of a machine is mostly dictated by the condition of the undercarriage, typically rated on a scale of 0% wear through (and beyond) 100% worn. When it is 100% worn, the tractor is generally worth scrap value only. You can part them out and make a bit more but your market is limited and typical buyers of this type of old machinery never want to pay more than they absolutely have to (which is not to say that some don't have the means to pay whatever they want to). In order to give you some indication of the generic market value of this machine, you can measure the wear on the undercarriage and post it here.
So good luck but my opinion is that your asking price will get no bites from the locals here; only counter-offers significantly less than what you're asking. Of course, you may be lucky and find a greenhorn that "absolutely has to have that tractor"

Thanks for the input guys. I am no CAT dozer expert. I am bit surprised by your comments regarding value. I have seen similar abandoned older D4 dozers, all without the winch, for sale and they never seem to be below $4K, and many are missing a part(s) here and there and no idea when they last ran, if they were running. So maybe it is what I know about the operational history and why it is close to running but not running as it sits, that makes me know by comparison that this unit should be worth the $6K range with the winch, even if it was in the sad shape of the others I have seen, which it isn't. Having said that, we are negotiable in price as we would like to get it out of here before the end of the summer.

I do have a lot of interest in the winch. So, I guess I should indicate a price for the complete dozer minus the winch. I feel the same asking price as the ones I have seen that are not near as nice as this unit, which is $4k. This price is also negotiable.

Again, thanks for your input and just feel free to contact me if you are interested in the dozer.

By the way we do have some spares for this dozer. Two of the main blade hydraulic cylinders, radiator, instrument panel minus instruments, couple roller stands, Main oil tank, pony motor tank, and numerous small parts. We are willing to sell these separately.

Not to put you down Catang, but old crawlers just seem harder to sell the last 10 years to me. But I am on the opposite coast and many, many more crawlers to choose from out here. But I hope you find someone interested, as I hate to see usable machines go for scrap.

Catang, I can't be for sure because of the quality of your pictures, but your D4 appears to have OEM snow sprockets and tracks. These help prevent ice build up in the rails. The OEM track shoes look nicer than ones that have been hand cut with a torch. Someone may be interested.  Good luck.

Hi Catang, I'm sure you're right, particularly when your potential buyers are perhaps not as familiar with these machines as the folks that tend to frequent this type of website - users here tend to be self-selecting in that they either have experience they want to share, or are looking to gain more information to make informed purchasing decisions. It's good that you asked her because you now have a perspective from experienced folks. One sale option you could look at is selling the winch but the buyer has to take the tractor too - sounds funny but it does work to get the entire machine off your hands. Best of luck with your sale and please do let us know how you get on.

Cheers,

I bought my '48 D4 7U last year for $1800. Running, with winch and ROPS. Undercarrige is 'ok' at best.

BTW: looking for a reversable PTO to trade for my D4 winch (working, albeit used well)
