I have S4647 which is a 1926 machine that is only about 40 tractor before the change to the top seat being standard. It also has no platform mounts nor is the trani case drilled for that top seat gear shift. The radiator also does not have the canopy mounting pads. Most of these early Thirties used the Stromberg except for the last few before the change over to the top seat machines. I have the serial number break between the Strombergs and Ensigns in my office. The trick is to remember to look tomorrow when I get there.

Hi Naylorbros, went thru all the possible changes, as there is no serial number plate.. I believe it is a 1925, but could be wrong. Need a carb to get the tractor running.

Thanks, Herb

Sorry about the missing serial number. Unlike the later machines I have not found a place where the number is stamped into a casting on the early machines. There was a Stromberg sell at Alan Schurman's auction a few years ago and I have heard of a couple of others changing hands but currently have no idea where to look for one. I have attached a couple of pictures of the Ensign off of S4647.

Thanks for the photos. I remember you helping me then trying to ID the year when I first bought the tractor. I had a polite discussion about the mag and carb that were on it, when I bought it. 'Oh I needed some quick cash so I sold them' Shook my head and finished with it is very difficult to find replacement pieces later. It is a nice survivor piece that was shedded in Cali,

Thirty Carb -
Nothing prevents use of a side draft carburetor to get it running. Two Bolts and a gas line -
Once you have it running, you can continue the search for the original equipment.

You might be surprised how well they perform with newer carbs.

That is exactly what I was going to do, while I am looking for a proper Ensign.

Thanks for the reply, HF

When there is a need and a will - it can be done. Direction of the draft does not really matter - some "art" with some tubing and a torch-wire welder do wonders!
Trick today is finding a carburetor that will function! They are getting scarce too!.

look for something that runs similar volume through carb, a quick guess would be a Farmall M, if you want it to Idle slower use a smaller carb like of a Farmall H. Original equipment is nice but more modern, readily available and functionality is hard to beat.
