Caterpillar D4 7U4057 1948. Great little dozer. I‘ve had it for eighteen years, it’s an early model. Only used it to clean up the lantana & black wattle mess on my 35 acre block. Clean up the occasional fallen gum and a small amount of simple easy earth work. Machine has been kept in a shed all the time I’ve owned it. It’s in good condition and it’s not rusty. Diesel motor is good. Starts well, never given me a problem and I’ve never done much to it. I have steam cleaned the main fuel tank, fitted a new fuel line, and an extra fuel filter with water trap. Pony motor is good. Good magneto. Have fitted caterpillar 6V electric start to the pony motor which works quite well. Also have fitted the Caterpillar 6V generator to the diesel motor which keeps the 6V pony motor battery charged. Also works quite well, will charge 7 – 8 volts. History on the dozer from the previous owner is it was originally a haulage machine on cane fields in nth Qld, so does not have track guards etc. There is no under carriage damage to tracks or frame indicating it has never seen rough hard work or rock work. Basically, I believe, it’s working life was on soft cane fields and has been used as I have used it, light clearing. It has a belly plate with a front tow hook. Rear end is fitted with a swivel draw bar and has been good for snigging logs. At some stage in it’s life it was fitted with a Buckeye 9’ dozer blade. Hydraulic pump attached to the front engine crank and sits in front of and below the radiator. I worked in hydraulics and was able to test the pump, which is good, fitted new hoses and new seals to the hydraulic cylinders. Cylinder rods are in good condition, no rust or damage. Cylinders do not leak. Controls are simple up and down. Main clutch is good and has good feel and actuation. Gearbox is good. After I first bought it, I did up the steering clutches, they are good. Some oil leaks around the final drive and the engine rear main. It is, after all 74 years old. Canopy is simple and strong as in the photos was on it when I bought it. I replaced three or four track rollers, bought from Tilleys in Toowoomba some years ago. It has a five roller track frame, some D4” have four roller track frames. Sprockets, chains, plates are in fair and useable condition. The 7U is the wide track frame, compared to the narrow frame 6U.I would only use this machine maybe twice a year, mostly sits in the shed. It has been very handy on my property over the years. It’s a good straight machine with everything there and in pretty good condition. Paint and metal work are good, would be an easy restoration. It's been undercover for the past eighteen years, would be a shame to see it sit outside and slowly deteriorate. Would suit a collector or restorer. I’m asking $18,000. Machine located west of Casino, northern NSW.
