I would like to install an electric starter on my D4. The bell housing is machined so it is down to finding a starter. It seems to me the big issue is the beveled pinion gear. Does anyone have a good core, good starter or whatever? Thank you! Please reply to the thread and I look forward to talking with you. Elton

You are talking about a direct start for the diesel, right?
I know you can go to Auto-lec.com and contact someone there. They have starters or could probably put one together for you for your tractor.
If your housing is already machined, it would pretty much just bolt in.
I have seen 50mt 24volt starters on amazon that have a RH helical gear and the correct rotation direction I think clockwise direction. I just do not know if the drive end housing would be correct. You might have to find a drive end housing to replace the drive end housing on one of those to get the correct rotation of the end housing and/or the correct bolt on pattern.

I want to use a 12 volt system. I found a local guy that I have never used previously who is able to help. He is working on it now. He has collected the parts for the starter and has ordered new fields and whatever else is needed to change my generator to 12 volt too! I know, it is more trouble than the 10si Delco conversion but it looks right and hopefully will do ok for my use. It is do-able with the right guy. Thank everyone for their input and suggestions.

I recently discovered that I could not use the CAT glow plugs. My intention is to repair/overhaul the pony motor to use when cold and be able to use the electric starter for restarts when the engine is warm or to start it in hot weather. We have plenty of hot summer weather here in Virginia. I might regret it later, but for now I am saving a few bucks. I haven't torn down my pony engine yet, but just spinning it over by hand shows no compression! Maybe just stuck valves, maybe totally trashed. I surely hope not! Thanks for your help!

start by removing the pony heads--pretty simple job and usually can reuse the head gaskets
one of my pony's has only 40 psi in one cylinder

I've got so much to do I'm not sure where to start. I have the main engine ready to go in, I have to start the steering clutch repair, and the pony motor! Maybe this weekend!
