A 1942 D2-5J would have just the "D2" Winch on it originally.
The D2N Winch came later.
BUT!
No Worries, it will fit!

I have a d2n on my 41 with no problems. It definitely has some custom fabrication for the linkage but its according hyster instructions. Works good

i don't know for sure about the Hyster D2 but if it follows the D4 and D4N then the changes would be the drum size and speed, the brake band is external on the drum and internal shoe type on the latter. speculation though

The D2 and D2N Hyster winches are nearly identical in basic design, but most all the parts, gears, bearings are considerably more robust in the the D2N, and not much will interchange. The Brake assembly is very similar in both and does share some parts, such as the same brake band.
Parts for both are difficult to find, so look inside and make sure the one you are considering is in good condition. Due to the design, both the D2 and D2N winches were prone to having gear damage from the sliding gear not being properly held in place, due to lack of maintenance of the shift lever lock. That would allow the gear to slide around and bump into other gears when the tractor was operating, chipping gears and starting a cascading effect of progressively larger chunks of gear breaking off, causing severe damage.
