One is rounded and the other is hex shaped.
I always figured they were like that so when you are backing up you know which lever your hand is on!

Unfortunately the new replacement ones all seem to be round - at least that's what I got in a batch of four from Cat

If you have finesse you can flat file or use a disk grinder to make the hex.
