I know a little about steam, If there is a steam shovel out there it will be quite pricey and if you want one you better drive 1000s of miles to get before someone else does. I helped restore one 40 years ago for Bud King, we hauled it out of Idaho 500 miles away. was up 120 miles of dirt road long long trip. It now sits outside a Modern Machinery in Missoula, it gets watered 3 times a week( no one cares, its not for sell )...And talk about a money pit ...boiler repair, certs, machine shop bills, injectors, ect not for the light wallet....WA7OPY

i believe the one at Rollag belongs to Bill Rudicil petersburg kentucky
There are at least 3 at Rollag. The sister of the one that dug the first Mayo Clinic is housed at Rollag (Jim Briden?), This one went to Mayo a few years ago to break ground for a new building. The Rudicil one,(huge) and they have a more recent restoration running now. That one has huge steel wheels with a big stationary boiler house on the back. One of the operators rides on the boom on that one. Not sure if there is more?

There is four working steam shovels running at WMSTR (Rollag). They all run on coal, the two that belong to Bill R. are being donated to the show and then Jim Briden owns the Marion. Then there is the huge Kentuckian, that came to the show from Battletown Kentucky. That is of the kind and style that dug the Panama Canal. That one took six semi loads to move to its new home. It is one awesome machine.
Come to the show it is the only place in the U.S.A. that you will see four working coal fired steam shovels operating. also some diesel shovels also.

Maybe your description is more general, in that we here in California anyway, used to call any shovel a "steam shovel" though I never saw one that ran on steam they were all diesel or gas. Good luck in your search, should be a great project.
