Oil Cooler for CAT 212 9T2508

Lookin' for an Oil Cooler for my CAT 212 9T2508...
I've read all the posts on "by-passing" the radiator oil cooler...AND, I'M NOT INTERESTED IN DOING THAT...
My son sprayed down the grader with a high-pressure washer, including the radiator, and it started leaking oil...Seems as though all the years of accumulated oil and dirt and stopped the leaks...
So, now, I'm in the process of removing the oil cooler from the radiator...
Researched this a bit, and find there's a company in Oregon that will make a new one for @ $750...That's a bit pricey for me...May just have to take the cooler to a local radiator repair shop to see what they can do...
Anyone got a good used one for sale ?...

I also talked to the Oregon people, they said the cooler was made from aluminum. So I will pass for now. I did disassemble a cooler in terrible condition just for a look see. They are silver brazed together. So very tough to get apart to stop a tube.

I got the oil cooler removed without any trouble...Just a lot of bolts to remove...I'll have to clean it up with some carb cleaner to check the damage...
The parts book shows Cooler Assembly 5F2142...for my CAT 212 9T2508...Later models show Cooler Assembly 3H2169...which can be used on my 212...
So, anyone got a 3H2169...or even a complete radiator with a good oil cooler ?...

cleaned up the oil cooler...and find that it is IRON...That is, the pipe, tanks, and tubes are "steel"...A magnet will stick to it...Popped the rust blisters on the bottom tank with a small ball peen hammer and found holes in the bottom tank...It is basically..."rotten"...Found some tubes that are rusted through...Thus, the core is "rotten"...This oil cooler cannot be repaired...A tag on the cooler says, "TESTED 53"...It lasted a long time...Now, to get an oil cooler to get the grader running again...

To fix my CAT 212 grader, I went ahead and ordered an oil cooler...directly from the Radiator Supply in Oregon...Got a much better price by dealing directly with them...Installed the new ALUMINUM oil cooler...with just a few adjustments...Graded my lane this afternoon...No leaks...One pipe is cool and the other one is warm on the cooler....So, the new Oil Cooler is doing its job...The folks at the Radiator Supply in Oregon are nice people, and easy to do business with...Might need to order a radiator core for the grader...I will do business with them again as needed...

Carl, do you have a photo of the new cooler? I'm curious as to the similarities/differences to the 5U cooler. I'm trying a little experiment with mine. It also had the rust holes through in the bottom tank. I've put about 30 coats of POR-15 on it. I do have the bypass components but I'm going to try it and see if the stuff holds with 30psi. I don't think it will but I'm curious.

Cheers,
Neil

Neil, I took a couple of photos with my I-phone...Not sure how good they are...
Now, here's the deal...The Radiator Supply House in Oregon...has samples of all the oil coolers, radiators, and such...for reference, and have mock-ups... to ensure their product will fit...So, refer to your Parts Catalog for the part number for the Oil Cooler for your 5U...It may be the same as for my CAT 212 as the engines are the same...Call Vance at Radiator Supply House in Oregon...They also have a web site you can visit...They can make you an oil cooler and ship it to you very quickly...
I determined,...for myself,...that it wasn't worth the time, effort, and money...to try to salvage and repair my old oil cooler...
You know...Stepping Over Dollars...to Save Dimes...
The new aluminum oil cooler fit very well...with just a couple of adjustments...a weld on the top of the tank was just a little tall...and filed off easily... The holes in the tab on the bottom of the cooler...had to be reamed a little...for alignment...
Overall,...I am very pleased with the new oil cooler...Considering the removal of the old oil cooler,...ordering the new oil cooler,...and installing the new oil cooler,...the machine is back on the road...
I live in Texas...It can get hot here...It can get freezin' cold sometimes...It was 29 here this mornin'...But, I'd rather have an oil cooler,...and not bypass it...
Later model engines have a heat exchanger on the engine...There must be some good reason for cooling the oil...Other diesel engines have oil heat exchangers on them...
So, bottom line,...after it warmed up today,...my son and I finished putting the radiator guard, fan shroud, and side panels back on the engine...Fired up the pony to get oil circulating,...fired up the diesel and checked for leaks, levels, and such...AND then graded our lane for a few hours...I'm happy to have the oil cooler problem...FIXED...
