This is rare in that it is a caterpillar maintainer on a I30 power train. It was built in the 1935era,the photos show placards on the machine , pin #.The engine is completely overhauled, new radiator, fuel tank, hood, manifold, tires, and the list goes on.A ton of $ and time went into this restoration it needs a good home. Its a lot of fun to operate, truly a one of a kind.Asking $15,000 Call David 605-214-9252

maybe you can provide a photo? Russell used several suppliers for power units, but not Caterpillar.

Ok i got your pictures

I think what you have is the power unit from a Russell Motor Patrol No 3 which used a 10-20 McCormick Deering drive train with Adams wheels, mounted under a Russell Motor Patrol No 6 Grader. The No 6 grader started with the X101 serial number range.

The reason for the Caterpillar Plates, is this unit was most likely a carry over inventory from when Russell sold out to Cat in 1928, therefore when sold by cat they would have added that plate.
Not knowing what the serial number from the power unit is, I would guess that your unit is a 1928 model not a 1935

But....it been a really long week and i could be wrong.

The red grader has a 10-20 power unit and the yellow one is a W-30. The W-30 was not a direct replacement for the 10-20, but is it possible that a repower was done because a W-30 had a better engine?

Do not know much about adams, but is it possible that an Adams motor patrol was married to a Caterpillar Motor Patrol?
This might explain the engine and wheels?

OK lets add to the confusion I have a grader very similar to the first post it has a McCormick 15-30 unit for power the grader assembly was mfg by Austin chicago ill later may have become Austin Western was painted some shade of orange still has some faint austin showing thru rear wheels have heavy cast centers with solid tread i found this in Marshal Minnesota i had Lavoie along for the trip and there was a cherry Best 60 there with belt pully minus the engine i think this was picked up by Tom Madden at John Mannix sale in michigan a few years later

I would assume that for Allis, Fordson, and McCormick, since all were use to power motor patrols, would not be restricted to one certain type of grader.
So Chuck it would be possible that its an Austin back half with Cat front half.

I would love to know more about its history and how it came to its present state.

I have added 2 photos showing the build stamp on I30 and the frame of cat blade .This unit was purchased by the town of Centerville South Dakota and used to maintain gravel roads for its entire life, we bought it at auction and took the pain taking task of restoring the unit.No paint color was remaining on any part of the machine , I felt it was appropriate to pain it Cat yellow. I feel it is an important part of Caterpillar history and would like it preserved and shared with others. Its amazing to me how well it works for maintaining gravel roads or drive areas, eppecially at 31 hp.I also want to be sure that my advertising this as a Caterpillar Prototype Bade is accurate. Thanks to all for your helping put the pieces of history together for this piece,I have a very limited amount of knowledge of this era.The blade portion of this tractor is constructed different than the Russel or Austin.

The serial tag says the grader unit is from a Twenty or Twenty-Five Motor-Patrol. My parts book lists from number X-101 thru X-675.
The main frame in your picture has some sort of a plate added where on a Motor-Patrol it would start bending down into a "S" shape.
This is where someone joined a #3 Motor-Patrols rear section and power unit was put together here. I can see where it was welded together in picture #3.
There are no welds on the Motor Patrols. Everything is either riveted bolted or bent. In fact, I always marvel at the craftsmanship of the way Caterpillar and Russell
bent all of the channels on their graders.
