aren't the old 3 cylinder 2h series RD6 vertical pony motors the same as well? or is the mounting different?


No they are different, similar but different. Quick way to tell early engine is the half dollar size water passage on the back of the block. Starting with 7M they did away with the rear water passage and moved it to the front side of the block, next to the main engine water pump.

A quick check shows that the 2U-D8 and the 3 cylinder in my Model 11 are different.
