Tractors and Parts Available in California.

I must unfortunately report that one of our Members has passed on. Rod Pomeroy was a long time ACMOC Member living in the Lake Hughes area. I met Rod a time or two at Tulare and around the area, but I hadn't seen him for a long time.

Rod's son Hal is handling his affairs. Hal indicated that Rod wanted to donate his sizeable collection of manuals to the Club. We are in the process of working through the mechanics of that deal now. Hopefully I'll have a further report on that contribution soon.

Rod also had a collection of tractors including many Caterpillars and parts. Hal would like to sell the tractors and parts, but doesn't have computer access or a good idea of even exactly what he has to sell at this point. I have offered to help Hal get these parts and tractors out to those of us who can use them. For now, all I've got is some general overview pictures. If you see anything in which your interested, post or send me an email and I'll try to get specific part numbers or serial numbers and more information on each part or tractor. Let me know your thoughts on prices and I'll send the information on to Hal. His comment was he'd make a "screaming deal" to anyone needing parts or even the tractors as long as they were going to be used and enjoyed, not melted down or abandoned.

First, some photos of the manual collection that we may be getting.

Now, some parts and tractors, all of which should be available:

A nice D2 seat tank, standard dents included. Actually, the dents are pretty minor compared to most of the tanks I've seen.
File Attachment:

File Attachment:

At least five sets of very nice D2 roller guards. These look to me to all be in very good shape with no wear from worn tracks or rollers rubbing.
File Attachment:

A really nice U series D2 radiator shell, sans core.
File Attachment:

Fenders, some sheet metal, a water pump and fan, other assorted parts.
File Attachment:

Another view of fenders and parts. I see some nice check breakers there, possibly for D2 or Thirty.

File Attachment:

Some D2 rollers and other parts.
File Attachment:

A really neat 9G D7 with complete Kay-Brunner hydraulic dozer setup. Very nice tractor, starts and runs well.

A J series D2 pony and main engine assembly, complete with radiator.
File Attachment:

A U series D2 engine, complete with radiator. Not sure if the pony is there or not. Other D2 spare parts laying around.
File Attachment:

More D2 parts.
File Attachment:

More D2 parts, a nice J series dash in there.

File Attachment:

A J series D2 transmission. Sprockets are pretty run out, the rest is in pretty good shape, we think.

Two HT-4 shovels. The intention was to make one good one out of two. Haven't moved or run in at least thirty years. Engine and clutch conditions unknown.

A really neat R-4, military spec with Letourneau single drum PCU and Hyster towing winch. Condition of engine and clutches unknown.

Another really neat unit - J series D4 with modified Letourneau unit. This unit was ex-Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. It was used to backfill trenches and has a very interesting side-cast angle blade. Notice the angling links pinned to the push arms. The blade offsets one side or the other to backfill the trenches. This unit starts and runs well.

More Cat parts, I think a hydraulic control unit.
File Attachment:

Radiator core.

And the piece de resistance, two brand new thirty link ITS (I think) D2 track chains complete with new weld on sprocket rings. No longer obtainable from other sources.

Hey Pete, I am interested in a set of roller guards for my D2. How much for a set and how much for shipping? Thanks, John

juiceman - it is quite the treasure trove, with some really neat non-Cat stuff along with the great Cat stuff you see here. I'm lucky to be able to meet people like this and get to poke around in their back yard.

oldparker - Neither Hal nor I have a good idea about values on most of this stuff. He is more interested in getting this stuff to people who can use it, the money is secondary. He has siblings and a trust involved with the estate, so he has to justify what he's doing a bit (can't just give stuff away), but he said he'd make "screaming deals" to people who would use and enjoy this stuff as his Dad did. Luckily, his siblings and he get along well and have a similar perspective on the stuff.

For shipping the stuff, I can arrange to pick it up, store it for as long as you might need and get it to your shipper of choice. My recommendation would be Fastenal. I've had nothing but good experience with them, their rates are very reasonable and the only caveats are the item has to be dropped off and picked up at a store and is shipped space available, so transit time will be however long it takes. Seeing that you're in New York, my guess is that Fastenal would probably charge somewhere between $400 and $600 to haul a set of those guards to you.

Another possibility, if you have the time, would be to have me store the guards for you until next year, when the National Show will be at Santa Margarita. I'll bet you can find someone coming out for the show who might give your guards a ride back to New York pretty reasonably.

Keeping that freight cost in mind, shoot me an offer and I'll pass it along to Hal. You can do so with a post here, by private message, by email at <a href="This email address is being protected from spambots. Not to mess things up here; I bought new ones from George Rankin at the SM show for about $78.00 each? You would need 2 inner 2 outer plus the spacers and bolts.
Pete: I would be interested in the new track chains, breakers and maybe guard for hyd. unit; however I would need to utilize the Garlic Hauling and Storage until I have a truck near you. I will email you later. Thanks! JM

That is the kind of information we need. Neither Hal nor I are really sure what any of this stuff is worth. The more data points we can get, the more likely we can make sure everyone knows what they're dealing with and no one gets screwed on either end of the deal. Really, I think Hal will be more than reasonable, but I know none of us would like to steal anything either.

The check breakers may be spoken for already. I've had some interest on the track chains and sprockets, but only have one firm offer at the moment that seems a little low to me. The Garlic Hauling and Storage Service is open for business, anything you need. An excuse to come up for a visit would be welcome, or loading on your truck at your convenience is fine too.

Thanks for the interest,

Pete.
