Old Cat (1928 model year)
This old 2 ton Caterpillar was purchased by my family at the 1954 Ky. State Fair from Roy C Wayne a local authorized dealer in Louisville Kentucky. It was on display in their exhibition booth.
I would like to sell it to someone interested in antique farm equipment for restoration intentions.
I also have an Ottaw Buzzmaster saw with a cutoff table I would like to sell.
Thanks,
Joseph Sansbury
Shepherdsville, Ky.

Your pictures need to be reduced in size in order to post on here. Open that box up again, in small print(if I remember) it states what size they need to be reduced to. Also on the front page under Bulletin Board Operations is a discussion on how to reduce photo's. I hope this helps!

Re-reading from the beginning it can not be a "2 Ton" as it was bought at the Display booth at the State Fair in 1954.
When you think of the average person selling something, Age is relative. 61 years is old no matter what it is. as far as rarity old, then 61 may not be that old.
Either way, if it isn't a pile of non-salvageable rust, it deserves not going to the Scrap pile.

I think you might be a little off on the age of the D2. The D2s started production in 1938 with a small number of units made in November and December of that year. These tractors would have had serial numbers starting with 3J for narrow gauge (40" across center of tracks) and 5J for wide gauge (50" across center of tracks) machines.
The 3J and 5J serial number machines were produced from November 1938 until 1947. During 1947 a newer series with different design, but the same dimensions, was released. These carried serial numbers starting with 4U for narrow gauge and 5U for wide gauge. Production of these machines ran from 1947 through 1957, when D2 production ended.
If the tractor was bought new from C. Wayne at an exhibition in 1954, it is likely a 4U or 5U machine. That late production date could make it a little more desirable, as it will have most of the design refinements made during the production run.
In the text of your first post, you mentioned a 2-Ton. If this tractor is really a Two Ton it actually could be a 1928 production tractor, as Holt and its successor Caterpillar made tractors of this model from 1922 through 1928. I could see that a distributor might have exhibited an older tractor at an exhibition in 1954, so it is possible that you really have a Two Ton and not a D2. Both models are similar in size and track type tractors, but the similarities end just about there. A D2 is a tractor with a diesel engine which will have a small gasoline pony engine for starting, or an electric start setup. A Two Ton has a gasoline engine and will most likely start with a hand crank sticking out the front of the radiator. Some Two Tons had a provision to start by hand crank sticking out the back under the seat and a very few have been adapted for electric starting.
Another distinction is that a D2 will have two steering clutch levers and a hand master clutch lever sticking up in front of the operator's seat. A Two Ton has a single steering pivot shaft sticking up in front of the operator with a bar with handles on each end in front of the operator. To steer the Two Ton, the operator pulls the handle on one side of the bar to steer one direction, and the handle on the other end to steer the other direction. Another caveat, however, I have seen a very few Two Tons adapted to have two steering clutch levers, but there are very few which have been adapted this way.
Either one could be interesting. Hopefully you can post pictures, or send them to someone who can. Pictures will help pin down exactly which machine you have and assist people in figuring out if they are interested.
Worst case, if you could email me some pictures I can post them here for you. My email address is <a href="This email address is being protected from spambots. Maybe it is a 1928 2 Ton that was used as a neat display at the fair to show how far Caterpillar had progressed in technology as a comparison to machines produced in 1954?
If you would like send me the pics via email and i will post them for you. erik at chriscomachinery dot com

Here is one more pic that JCCA sent me of the back of the machine. Note the belt pulley, which should be an item of additional interest for this machine.
Pete.
