How would you like that old dingy looking oil gauge to look like new again. Only an original gauge should enhance your nicely restored CAT. Send me your gauge and it will be cleaned, repainted, new dial face installed and brass mounting bolts supplied. Glass face will be polished. $140.00 includes shipping back to you.

Nice work, thanks for showing us Moulding, I have two identical gauges here in need of reconditioning but one has a broken glass, can that be repaired Bill and at what cost roughly?
Thanks
Mike

Thanks Scott for the tribute
I Try
Mike; At this time I don't have a source for replacable glass. If I could get hold of some old gauges that has mechanical problems, perhaps I could obtain some glass faces. I talked to a watch repairman in my little town and he said if you went to buy a lens like that
Hold on to your wallet!!!!
Geary; You know, I'm not for sure when CAT stopped using that type od gauge. Question to anyone out there----How late is your D2 or D4 that still has that large face gauge??
On that Gray rimmed gauge of Scott's, the date on the back of the face was "Aug 33" I'm working on one from Chad Enyhart and it has a date of "37" That really tugs at my heart when I see dates like that, since I'm a 3-18-34". OK, for those of you that don't have your calculator handy, that's 81 years of age!!!!
Question to you fellows???/What color should I be painting the metal rim?? I believe that when new it was black. The reason I painted the two of Scotts the way I did was because that's the way they were when I recieved them. My thought are, they should be black, unless otherwise stated. Give me your thoughts.
The mechanism in those old gauges are a marvel to look at. They are built like a clock. All brass, little links, tiny screws and a "Rack & Pinion". I have made (modified) some tools to work on these and I use a pressure regulating valve to set the needles back in proper position.
As I've stated earlier, $140.00 and I'll pay the freight back to you. Quote; "Bring em On" Bill Walter

Hi Bill, I would say black on the plates also. My Diesel Seventy-Five had the Sylphon gauges, I got a couple of parts ones and made some good ones, they are a marvel in how they are made! I have a couple of glass lenses in the original cat boxes but are saving them for my gauges incase one gets broken. I also have some nos US gauges but didn't know if they were for that era of 1935.

Cat also used an Ashcroft large face oil pressure gauge in their tractors. I picked one up on e-bay about 10 years ago. I have seen this gauge on a D2 J series tractor years ago. IMHO, Sylphon oil pressure and fuel pressure gauges were the most beautiful gauges Cat installed on their tractors along with the Stewart-Warner large face water temp. gauges. A family relative has a 51' D4/7U serial#15195. All the gauges are original. The only large face gauge on it is the SW temp gauge. The fuel pressure gauge is a Rochester small face and the oil pressure gauge is a SW small face also. I have a D4/7U parts book for serial numbers 7U1-7U27569. It appears from the drawings that 7u1 to 7U6675 all had the large face gauges. From 7U-6676 to 7U9953 the fuel and temp. gauges were large face, but the oil pressure gauge was a small face one. From 7U9954 to 7U14567, the temp gauge is still a large face one, it looks like the oil and fuel pressure gauges are small face since it does not show a part number for the bezel & glass assem. or the gasket. Hence I'm thinking small face throw away gauges. Same set up for 7U14568 to 7U17118. This is the serial number range of my relatives 7U and the gauges are original as stated before. Effective with 7U 17119, it appears that all the gauges were small face ones. No bezel, glass or gasket available for any of the gauges. That's my take on it anyway.

Thanks so much for the S/n breakdown on the break in type of gauge and when used. I have s/n books but I don't have the one the club puts out that give the year. When would you say they changed as to the year? Thanks; Bill
