Hey c'mon Wombat, curious minds need to know - is there a preferred timber variety and grain?
Does Mountain Ash perform better than Stringybark, and is it crucial as to which way the grain is aligned? :confused2: :biggrin1:

Red Gum of course, old railway sleepers cut to about 12" and fitted on its edge worked really well, especially in very claggy and packing conditions. Just weld on a piece of suitable size channel for the block to drop into, a bolt through it, and hey presto, aftermarket supplier, State Rail. they also supplied copper wire for other repairs.

YES, cattle yard posts and tynes for a rough root rake, as for the rail network Shelley was the highest section of rail line in Victoria, sometimes snow bound as well as the steep gradients and tight curves, many a rail accident with trains hauling in materials for the West side of the Snowy Scheme with rail head at Cudgewa.

Hello Old-Iron,

Thanks for the validation on the parting out and scrapping what is left at some point in the future. I talked to Dad and we have decided to try and get the inside unit running.

Because there have been several requests for parts from the outside unit, we have decided to part out that machine rather than sell the whole unit. I will be putting some additional photos of the various parts requested in this thread. I will also respond to the private messages that have been sent previously.

With regards to the inside unit, we are going to try to get it running again. Once we start that project, I'll start a new thread on the discussion forum for anyone who might be interested.

As far as the generator on the outside unit goes, there has been a lot of interest. We are going to remove it from that unit and see if we can test it to see if it is operational to get a better idea of its condition and possible value. If the inside unit restoration goes reasonably well, we may install the generator on that unit rather than selling the generator. So it will be a while until we make that call.

At this point I'd also like to thank everyone for all of the advice and feedback.

Replied by crine on topic Link and Shoe Part Numbers
Hello Ron,

Thanks for the suggestion on getting link and shoe part numbers. I did a cursory look when I was over there taking the latest set of pictures and I didn't really notice anything like a casting number on either the links or the shoes. I'll take a closer look the next time I am over there to see I can make anything out.

There was a request for some photos of the outside unit pony motor.

The carb bowl is damaged as shown in photo 1. The magneto is not attached. It is inside Dad's shop. The air cleaner is also inside.

I would love to take some of those parts from that pony motor. Too bad you aren't closer so I could pick them up
